“It’s the guy who tried to kill him,” I said.

“Yeah, I heard about that. That was probably the guy who took him. The guy holding him is the one who ordered the hit.”

“What do we do?” I asked.

“I go there and negotiate,” he said soberly.

I corrected him.

“We go there and negotiate.”

He looked at me coldly.

“There’s a good chance someone’s gonna end up dead. If you want to be the cannon fodder, I would love not to die tonight.”

I swallowed, allowing the reality of what was going on to sink in.

“Whatever it takes,” I told him.

“Damn! My brother really did find a crazy one,” Remy said, almost sounding impressed.

I wasn’t going to acknowledge the asshole’s bullshit. If I was gonna die tonight, I didn’t feel like wasting the words.

Turned out, his plan really was to get me killed. Knowing where Hil was being held, the two of us were just gonna walk into the place. And after I told him how good I was with a shot gun, he looked at me and laughed.

“You think that we’re going to keep my brother alive by going in cowboy style? Jesus, you really don’t know anything, do you? No. I told you, we’re going there to negotiate. If you decide to do anything crazy, I’ll kill you myself. My brother means a whole lot more to me than he does to you. I will do anything to make sure that he’s the one who walks out of there alive.”

“Then, we’re in agreement. Because that’s what I plan on too,” I said, staring into the thug’s eyes.

With Remy clear about where I stood, he and I left Dillon’s apartment for his car. He was driving what he had stuffed his brother into back at Snow Tip Falls. I had never been in such a fancy car before. Considering Remy was acting like he had no intention in allowing me to survive the night, the vehicle was fitting. It was like getting to choose your final meal. It was a bit of luxury before the end.

Speeding our way through the New York streets, I began to realize that Remy was insane. I was then sure of it when after parking outside of a high-rise building, he flipped down the sun visor, opened the vanity mirror, and adjusted his hair.

Was he kidding?

“Making sure you look pretty?” I asked, wondering what the hell he was doing.

He looked at me like he had a rat stuck in his ass.

“When you go into a negotiation, you don’t go in looking weak; you look your best.”

He glanced at what I was wearing. “Or, whatever it is you have going on there.”

“Asshole,” I said.

“Redneck,” he retorted

At least we knew where we both stood.

Following him as he left the car, I adjusted my flannel shirt and beat up jeans. I didn’t have much to work with. But if it meant getting Hil out of this unharmed, I was willing to try my best.

Remy saw me squirming and didn’t comment. I didn’t like him thinking he had gotten the better of me and had made me feel self-conscious, so I appreciated him not pointing it out. Maybe he wasn’t a complete asshole after all.

Entering the building like we owned the place, Remy made a beeline to the person sitting behind the desk.

“Two to see Arnaud Clément. He should be expecting us,” Remy said as if we were meeting him to share a beer.

The short, mustached man picked up his phone and made a call. Remy didn’t look at him but I couldn’t help watch what was going on. This whole thing felt insane. We were going there to rescue the guy I loved, and everyone was treating it like an annoying business transaction. I was in a different world. I truly didn’t know what I was dealing with.
