The man looked at Remy confused.

“I’m sorry, who is this?”

“He’s the man that loves my brother,” Remy told him, catching me off guard.

Looking at Remy for a moment, I turned back to the older guy.

“That’s right. I love his brother and I’m not gonna let you do anything to him,” I said ready to die.

He looked at me trying to puzzle everything together.

“So, this is someone who means something to your family?”

Remy wasn’t quick to answer, but soon he nodded his head. “Yeah. He means a lot.”

“Good enough,” he said before lifting his gun and shooting me.

Chapter 19

Hil

The explosion that followed the gunshot ripped through me like I was made of paper. The man I loved, and would do anything for, moved in slow motion. Every painful twitch that rippled through his body tore through mine.

Swept off his feet, he hits the ground in anguish. Cali had been shot. I had gotten him killed.

“This is why we lay the tarp,” the murderer said as he casually turned to a henchman. “Now he is going to get blood all over my carpet.”

Fire burned through me hearing his heartless words. I wanted him dead. I wanted everyone dead. He couldn’t be allowed to get away with doing this to someone as good and kind as Cali. There had to be consequences. And when I looked at Remy, I knew he thought the same thing.

Stunned, my brother stared at Cali. I don’t know how they met or ended up here together, but Remy reacted like Cali meant something to him. When he found my eyes, I realized that it was because Cali meant something to me, and he felt it.

Staring at me, it was like he could read my mind. I never approved of my brother’s acts of violence, even when they were in my defense. But here and now, they were justified. He could tell what I wanted him to do, whatever the consequences.

Hardening his jaw and reaching behind his back, I was about to get what I desired when I heard the only voice that could bring me back.

“I’m okay,” Cali said, drawing my attention.

I didn’t see where the bullet had hit him, but as he attempted to get off the floor, it became clear. My father’s rival had shot him in the leg. Cali was a football player whose specialty was kicking the ball. The bullet might have ruined his life, but it wouldn’t take it.

“I think I’m fine,” he said, bringing tears of relief.

I could breathe again. My world wasn’t coming to an end. All I wanted now was to get out of here and take care of the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He had taken a bullet for me. I could never have imagined anyone like him. The pain I felt from my love for him was overwhelming. All I wanted was to climb inside of him and warm myself with his heart.

For that to happen, it meant that Remy couldn’t get us all killed. I quickly whipped my gaze to him. He still had his hand behind his back. I could practically feel his finger on the trigger.

I was begging him not to do it but he was no longer looking at me. He was locked on his target. I didn’t know what he was about to do.

“Of course you’re alright. I said a pound of flesh, not the whole hog,” Armand said casually.

Letting his handgun drop to his side, he looked at Remy. There was no missing what was in my brother’s eyes. Armand didn’t overreact.

“So, what do you say? Have we made a deal or shall we continue our negotiation?” he said before his two henchmen lifted their guns and pointed it at Remy.

Knowing that I had a chance at spending a long life with the man I loved, I groaned, begging for Remy’s attention. When he looked at me, I did everything I could to show him how I felt. I wanted to walk out of here. I wanted it to be with Cali and Remy. And I wanted the life that my brother had negotiated. I wanted it more than anything.

As I pleaded with him with my eyes, I saw the guy I grew up with reveal the tenderness he always tried to hide. The hand that was behind his back, returned to his side.

“We have a deal. But the minute you don’t live up to your side of the bargain, know that you won’t see me coming.”
