“Okaythen. I’ll let you go. Thanks again.” Her tone was playful and light.

“You’re welcome.”

I dialed Jhorie immediately after. I had a sudden urge to hear her voice and everything in me settled when it flowed through the phone.

“Hey.”

“You busy?”

She huffed and I heard movement in the background along with hammering and loud voices. She was likely in the middle of construction, pissing everyone off. The thought and visual had me smiling. “A little. Dealing with delays.”

“Anything I can help with?”

“The cabinets aren’t here. I called and he said he would fix the problem.”

“And you gave him hell about it too, didn’t you?”

“I made him be accountable and he threatened to call you until I mentioned I was in charge of the projectandyour fiancée.”

The last part came out harsh. She was annoyed with having to play the fiancée card which brought a smile to my face. “And how did that work out?”

“You know how it worked out, Ezekiel. He was fumbling all over himself to make it right which he could have done initially. Not simply because of who I am to you.”

“He should have. I’ll…”

“No, you will not. It’s handled. Are we doing dinner later?”

“I’ll be late. You’ll likely be asleep when I get in. I have something to take care of which can’t be put off.”

“Do you want me to wait up?”

“No, I’ll wake you when I get there.”

“I’m sure you will.” Her tone was teasing. “How is your day? I hope better than mine?”

“It’s been stressful but there was resolve, so good and bad.” My mother briefly crossed my mind. “And yours, other than the delays?”

“That was pretty much it.” Her tone shifted.

“You sure that’s all? Anything else bothering you?”

She released a sigh. “Nothing that can’t wait until later.”

“You sure?”

“Very but I have to go. I’ll see you when you get home.”

“Home, I like the sound of that.”

“Me too.”

I looked up to catch my assistant standing in the doorway. I had meetings all day.

“I have to go. If you need anything, call me.”

“I will.”

After I ended the call, I left my office to head to another meeting. My assistant entered to clean up the papers strewn all over the floor while I mentally prepared to negotiate prices for properties. Lingering in the back of my mind was the reminder that after my day was complete I would be heading home to Jhorie which made the weight of it more bearable.
