However, when I reached my building, I was greeted with a very unpleasant surprise. Two men attempting to pry my door open in broad daylight. What in the entire fuck? Did they not give a damn?

“Hey, what are you doing?”

One of the two turned, giving me a once over before turning back to the door his buddy was working on with a crowbar.

“Are you serious right now? You’re going to ignore me? Get the hell away from my apartment.”

They both turned and I realized they were not men, in fact, but teens. Their eyes narrowed and shone as they glanced at each other. “This yo’ place?”

“Yes, it is.”

The larger of the two yanked a gun from behind his back and smiled. “Good, then you can save us some time.” He raised the gun and pointed it at me. My heart leaped but I kept my cool when he demanded, “Open the fucking door.”

“No, I will not. You’re going to leave.” I rolled my shoulders back and stood my ground, pulling whatever false bravado I could muster up.

He smirked and the second guy moved to his side, clutching the crowbar next to his thigh. My eyes lowered and moved to the gun.

“Look, sexy, don’t be stupid. Just open the fucking door, let us get what we want or I can pry the door open, drag you inside, and we’ll still get what we want from your apartmentandyou.” His eyes dragged over my body and he smiled arrogantly, biting down on his lip.

“Are you insinuating that you’re going to steal from this woman and also assault her?”

The deep tenor sounding from somewhere nearby settled over me with familiarity. I knew the man it belonged to.

“Nah, we didn’t say nothing like that.”

The kid lowered his gun and tucked it away but Ezekiel approached him, removed the weapon from behind his back, and shoved the kid in the chest.

He kept the gun near his leg when he addressed them both. “I don’t like liars and you just fucking lied to me. I heard what you said.”

“I mean…” The kid’s eyes nervously slid over to me. “We were just talking. We would never do no shit like that.”

Ezekiel lowered his chin and the second guy spoke up. “We’d take her shit but we wouldn’t put our hands on her. We don’t do that. He was just talking, for real. I swear.”

Ezekiel edged closer. “Then you’re not as dumb as you look but I still have a problem with you stealing from her or any other residents who live here. You should know better thanthattoo.”

“We’re just trying to make a little money. My mom would kill me if she knew I was getting it any other way.”

“But she would be alright knowing you’re breaking into residents’ apartments taking what doesn’t belong to you, what you have not earned?”

He shrugged. “No.”

“How about this, you stop stealing and I’ll help you make money.”

“Word?” the smaller of the two said, stepping forward, looking hopeful.

“Word.” Ezekiel mocked the kid and I arched a brow at him. “But you only get one chance. You fuck that up and you deal with the consequences.”

“What are the consequences?” the smaller of the two questioned, inflating his chest.

I snorted. “Are you that fucking stupid? If you’re asking for the consequences you're planning on fucking up.” I groaned my annoyance.

Ezekiel grinned but never looked at me. He kept his eyes on them. “She would be correct. Now do you want the deal or not?” he stated with a firm look at them.

They glanced at each other and nodded. “Yeah, we’re down.”

“For now, you keep an eye on things out here. You make sure no one bothers Ms. Abraham and in a few weeks, when we start construction for renovations out here, you get to work…”

“Work?”
