“Yes, work…” Ezekiel stated. “You help the teams clear the debris from each apartment by dumping the demolition waste in trash bins, making sure the grounds remain clean and hazard free, and you get paid.”

“How much?”

“Twenty dollars an hour but you show up every day and work or you don’t get paid.”

“Man, that’s manual labor. Ain’t nobody trying to do that,” the larger one mumbled in annoyance.

“That’s more money than you can get selling stolen items around here. So if I were you, I would take the deal,” I added, still annoyed we were having this conversation in the first place.

They looked at each other one last time. “Aight. We can do that.”

“My guy Fred will be here next week. Tell him I sent you and that you work for me. What are your names?”

“Tank and Belly.”

“How about we try the names on your birth certificates.”

“Denmark and Gavin.”

“Last names?”

They cringed like it pained them but they mumbled the answers.

“Taylor.”

“Jenkins.”

“Alright, be here next week when they start delivering the bins and speak to Fred. Until then, make sure everyone knows she’s off limits. Anyone messes with her; they’re messing with an Omari.”

Their eyes flashed with awareness of the name and they quickly straightened up. “Yes, sir. We got you.”

“Can I have my gun back?”

Ezekiel narrowed his eyes and the kid smiled before saying, “Can’t blame me for trying.”

“Actually, I can. Do you know how stupid it is to have this on you?”

“It isn’t registered.” He shrugged before they walked away. Ezekiel turned to me.

“That went well. Don’t you think?” he uttered, seeming very unbothered but I had questions.

“I’m very grateful that you stepped in, but what are you doing here?”

“I’m here to see you since you refused to see me.” He smirked. “Give me a second.”

I kept my eyes on him when he moved to a Maybach Pullman, opened the truck, then closed it shortly after and returned without the gun.

“You’re going to leave that in your car unattended?”

“Why wouldn’t I? No one will mess with me or my car.”

“I’m sure they wouldn’t,” I muttered, heading to my door. Ezekiel was right behind me which prompted me to glance over my shoulder.

“Where are you going?”

“With you. You’re not going to invite me in?”

“No.”
