“You should have held.”

“You still would have won.”

“Yeah, but it wouldn’t have been because you busted.”

“Deal again,” she groaned.

I did as she asked.

“You said my life doesn’t have to change…”

“Other than you not fucking anyone but me,” I made clear and she grinned.

“Well other than that, but you didn’t want me at my apartment because you said it wasn’t safe. Cress has security. Is that a requirement?”

“Pending where you go and the situation, yes, but day to day you can be on your own. Cress’s career is part of the reason Elias insists she has security.”

“You sure you’re not a criminal.” She tapped her cards, asking for another. When she noticed what it was she groaned in disappointment.

I grinned. “The only thing I’m sure of is that the woman sitting across from me right now can’t play cards for shit.”

“You might want to curb talking shit to the woman you not too long ago asked to marry you.”

I chuckled. “Noted but if stating facts is talking shit, we might be in trouble because you truly can’t play worth shit, Jhorie.”

“I haven’t lost every hand. I won your jet, Omari.”

“And it now belongs to me again.” I smirked, dealing another hand.

“What happened to the what’s yours is mine bullshit?”

“You have to say yes.”

“Okay then, yes.”

My eyes lifted to hers and she raised a brow which had me tossing the cards on the sofa and heading to the bedroom. I dug the ring from my overnight bag and returned, placing the small leather case on top of the cards after I was seated again. Locking my eyes on Jhorie I waited while she lowered hers to the ring then lifted them back to me.

“You have a ring?”

“I do.”

“Of course you do,” she mumbled and I motioned to it with a toss of my chin.

“If you’re really saying yes, then open it.”

It took her a minute but she carefully lifted the box, slowly opened the lid, and her eyes shot to mine.

“Did you pick it?”

“Why would you think I didn’t?”

“Because men like you have shoppers and handlers.”

“I have both when necessary but I wouldn’t dare trust anyone else to pick something so meaningful for my future wife. Do you like it?”

“I want to say yes, but right now I don’t know if I’mme. It sort of feels like I’ve been dropped into the middle of someone else’s life.”

“I assure you, you’reyouand this is your life. That is, if you want it to be.”
