Sarah gave him a gracious smile, and he proceeded to wrap the blanket around her, swathing it over her shoulders. She felt an electric shock spark through the blanket, wondering if it was her imagination.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Kael gave her a quick nod, then sat on the chair he was initially sitting in. Sarah caught herself wringing her fingers, then sat in the patio chair across from him.

“Do Drakonians get the same cozy feeling from storms?” Sarah asked, wanting to avoid replicating the awkwardness of the dinner.

At first, Kael gave her a look that relayed that he had no clue what she was referring to. Then he looked out over the black dusk in a way that felt like he was longing for something.

“If by cozy, you mean inspired, whimsical, even romantic,” he said, leaning against his hand. “Then yes. There’s something about the atmosphere dancing to its own tune that feels incredibly … stirring.”

His voice was low and meditative. The flickering of the yellow fire routed his face into a halo. Sarah was glad she had a blanket over her chest, or he might have picked up on the rapid rate of her breath.

One of the housekeepers brought them some delicious tea with notes of cinnamon and dark chocolate. Kael drank his and gazed out over the sky, the only sound between them the lashings of the flames.

“You look like you have something on your mind,” Sarah said boldly, holding the mug to her bottom lip.

“Hmm?”

“What’s wrong?”

His face hardened. Sarah knew that it likely had something to do with Drakonian politics, but even if she didn’t completely understand it, she at least wanted to listen. She longed to soothe him in ways that went beyond the general requirements of a nanny.

“Oh, nothing,” he replied gruffly. “Military misunderstandings. I am not always great at compartmentalization.”

“Tell me.”

She pushed him, but he seemed to respond. He was still peering at her when something that sounded like bowling balls crashing together split across the sky. Sarah only saw it in her peripheral vision, an influx of aqua peeling over the sky like a vein, and it was nothing short of outstanding.

“Jesus!” she called out.

She leapt from her chair and went to Kael. It wasn't a conscious decision. The sound had been so blaring that she reacted instinctively with a startled reflex. Too late, she realized it meant that the most comforting thing she could find in the area was Kael himself. She tried not to think about that any deeper than she already had, feeling her cheeks heat at the idea.

“Careful,” Kael said, taking her by the waist to keep Sarah from stumbling.

She had accidentally done the cheap stunt from romantic comedies and quite literally tripped into her crush’s arms after a little fright. Except it was hardly graceful. He had to guide her down to plant her bottom on his legs as she attempted to prevent them from coming into contact. When she finally let it happen, her arms flailed over her head, eventually settling smack at the core of his collarbone.

Sarah was frazzled. The sound of the crackling thunder felt distant compared to the raging of her heartbeat.

He had one hand on her waist and another on her thigh. The hard warrior look had been slapped away, replaced by a softening, tender relief. Kael wasn’t moving his hands from her body or helping her to stand. They stayed where they were, and he began to stroke her thigh in sensual circles. She supposed the gesture was supposed to be calming, but it only made her heart race faster as her arousal grew and demanded her attention.

“Sorry,” she croaked, her mouth having run dry. “I…”

Kael did something spectacularly out of character, sending every thought out of Sarah’s head and making her heart dance like a rhythmic drum. He placed his thumb on her bottom lip and began to trace along its plump, candy-apple radiance.

Sarah stared at him in disbelief. His golden eyes were swimming with a hunger that made her body feel maddeningly carnal.

“You’re so beautiful,” Kael whispered. “And the way you are with Suki is just … I feel something here. I don’t know why, but I do … do you?”

Sarah nodded. The hand on her thigh crawled up to the crest of her jeans, where her clit was swollen and hard. Sarah felt dizzy gazing into his eyes, her hands frozen on his chest while the thumb on her mouth helped her part her rosy lips.

“Kael,” she breathed, her own voice sounding foreign to her. “I want you …”

It may have been wrong, but that was something that Sarah was going to have to consider later. There was no going back after being held in the Commander’s strong, hulking arms. The vise of his hand between her legs and the thumb that slipped between her teeth as she gasped in ecstasy was even bigger than the storm that was brewing around them.

It was foolish to deny such supernatural passion.
