“I want to taste you, Sarah. But I don’t want you getting too … enthusiastic.”

She promised him she would lay still, back against the mattress, and do her best to keep the writhing to a minimum. She needed his mouth on her as much as she needed the medicine to heal. It had nearly been two weeks since they last made love on the hillside, and her hunger for him had only rocketed since confessing their enduring love.

“Don’t make me beg,” she said, tracing her fingertips along his neck.

Kael eventually gave in, crawling between her legs and using the expert lashings of his tongue to bring her to an explosive orgasm. It washed over her, full-bodied and powerfully rough. The ache was finally relieved.

“Oh, Kael,” she moaned up to the ceiling.

She offered her services to him, but he was adamant that they wait. His hard cock beneath the sheets was nearly irresistible, but she didn’t want to push him anymore. They fell asleep in each other’s arms, the fantasy of finally entangling with his strong form enough to ease her into slumber.

Sarah felt well enough the next day to move around, helping with breakfast and sitting with Suki to eat and explore her daily lessons. Kael questioned it, but she knew his reasoning behind it. The man was protective nearly to a fault. It was his way of showing love. He would have to get used to her relentlessness in turn.

“Sarah, can we play in the garden?”

Suki looked at Kael, who gave a signature grumble. She gave Suki a little wink at the breakfast table, her face animated and dramatic.

“I will play with you, honey. Don’t worry. Daddy just has to get used to it.”

Suki covered her mouth, giggling. Kael’s face melted into a smile. It made him beyond handsome.

They spent the day like any other day before the attack. Sarah didn’t use her left arm the way she normally would, using her right prominently, which wasn’t much of an issue as she was right-handed. Kael watched them from the terrace, far more relaxed than she had ever seen him.

When evening draped over the day, the air became crisp. Kael came out with a visitor, his mother. She had only seen her a handful of times since her arrival, but Sarah had always been comfortable with her. His mother had a softness to her that Sarah had yet to encounter among Drakonians, especially upon first meeting. She was sage and clearly loved her son.

They sat on the terrace with tea later while Kael put Suki to bed. Kael’s mother used the opportunity to pull something from her shawl, holding it tightly in the grip of her palm.

“I wanted to give you something,” she said, holding out her hand. “I know you know about fire stones. Suki told me she gave you our household one.”

Sarah wore her sweater on one arm, as the strain to push it into the left was too profound. Kael’s mother took her unharmed hand and held it gently, revealing something that glowed like the core of the sun.

Sarah’s eyes widened. For a brief second, she thought Kael’s mother had lost her mind and was holding pieces of ember from a dying fire. But after a few seconds, she realized that it was crystallized and jagged, like it had been broken off from something much larger.

“What … is this?” Sarah tried to say politely.

Kael’s mother giggled, her gold eyes pulsing in the dark.

“It’s Drakonian iron. We usually melt it down to create indestructible structures. Every now and then, we use it for aesthetics, for art. Petal used it a lot. She liked to build things with it.”

The mention of Kael’s mate made the conversation fall still and silent for only a brief moment. Kael’s mother placed her hand on Sarah’s leg.

“We don’t all get to age, sweet Sarah. I can sense in you that you know how much of a privilege that is. I can sense you also had a great loss. It is what will make you a wonderful mother to Suki.”

Sarah felt her heart swell, and her eyes became teary. Kael’s mother placed the piece of crystal into her palm, and it was warm.

“I love her,” Sarah said, her throat running dry. “I really do. And I love your son. I will never be Petal, but I can be the best version of me for both of them.”

The woman smiled, tears rolling down her cheeks. They embraced in the dark. The crystal sat between them, its orange light blinking like a signal.

Sarah knew she was where she was supposed to be. Somehow, she also knew that her own mother had brought her there. Like a lantern in her heart, showing her way through the darkness.

TWENTY-FIVE

SARAH

Sarah wrapped her arms around Kael's neck, reveling in the nearness of him. He lowered his head to capture her lips in a passionate kiss. Sarah’s heart raced with desire.

Kael's lips were soft yet firm, and she couldn't help but moan softly as he deepened the kiss. His hands roamed over her body, sending shivers down her spine, and she leaned in closer, wanting more.
