Oakley took a deep breath. She had to do it.
Even if she got in big trouble.
She waited until Nanny was downstairs in the living room. She could hear her on the wooden steps all the time.
Then Oakley opened her bathroom door.
Her special tunnel waited. The cell phone with her mommy's phone number would be on his desk. Charging.
She had to get help. Either for her mommy—or if it was another lady.
She had to help her, too.
Goodpeople helped each other when they were in trouble.
Just like Jilly and Milly Silly said.
Oakley had to be really, really brave right now.
She never went into the tunnel when Grandfather was home.
She was going to have to now.
Oakley just had to.

Murdoch headedtoward Zoey’s bungalow. Neil had made a few hints about possibly buying it from her. Murdoch would give her the message, after he kissed the hell out of her.
Then they'd talk about the kid’s letter and figure out where to go from there. Figure out if this Oakley Daviess even existed. If she did—they were going to have a talk with that kid and her parents. Make sure she was ok first. And figure out why this random kid had focused on Zoey as her mother. He strongly suspected it was a sibling’s kid or something. Maybe even that guy they were still tracking down now. Not one of those asshole Davis brothers, but the other one.
Saint, or something.
Thatwould be a hell of a name to live up to, that one.
To answer his questions, Murdoch needed his woman.
He drove down her street like he had a million times before. It was a good place. Quiet. He’d enjoyed his two years in Garrity, he decided.
It had helped himthink,helped him heal after what had happened to his family.
And it had given him Zoey Sofia. Yeah, he’d always love Garrity. No question. Maybe he would buy a little cabin somewhere in the county.
