Page 185 of Hearing her Cries

They’d found the paper backing of a transdermal patch under the back wheel of Bonnie’s car. It matched what they’d watched happen.

He’d hit her sister. Drugged her sister. And just put her in the back of his SUV like he’d abducted women every single day.

They’d gotten a warrant fast. People from the TSP were in Eastman’s office now, searching it. Here, at the hospital. More were back there processing Bonnie’s car.

They’d called in Hope’s own team to help process the FCU campus and the hospital parking lot.

They were taking Bonnie and Crispin’s disappearances seriously now. Well, now that they knew it was all connected to that ambush at FCU, anyway.

Heather’s cynical side knew how the world worked, after all. If there hadn’t beenthatconnection…she’d probably still be dealing with Kimball.

But now… “What’s happened?”

The chief turned to her. His hand rose, cupped her elbow. He guided her to one side, away from the crowd of TSP officials and whoever else it was there around them.

Her newnephew-by-marriagestood at his side. She was still reeling from the knowledge that Denita had had many more children than just the three Heather had known about.

But that was a discussion for later.

Right now…she just wanted Crispin and Bonnieback.

Every minute that passed up the odds they wouldn’t get them back. Especially Crispin. She had been missing just too long.

Heather looked down at Ember and fought tears. Losing one of her girls…that was her worst nightmare. Her second was losing one of her sisters of the heart, and Bonnie. Her family.

They’d already lost Nick. She would never forget that pain.

“What’s going on?” Heather asked as Hope put her hand on Heather’s other elbow. Her baby sister was just as scared as she was. “Have they found them?”

“They are en route. The young women taken today wear tracking devices. A prototype not available on the market yet. We have now tracked their locations. It’s just a matter of time getting help to them. We’ve sent out choppers as well. And air ambulances are geared up and will be taking off momentarily, just in case they are needed. We’re taking this very seriously. You have my word on that. The first four responders are nearly there now,” the chief said. Then he hesitated, like he was searching for words. “Along the route, they spotted a young woman.”

“Alive?” Heather asked tightly as the rest of her sisters and sisters of the heart crowded closer.

“Yes. The woman was walking along the highway.” He leveled a look at her and the rest of her family. “She identified herself as Crispin Coleson. The Value sheriff reports she matches the description of your niece.”

“One brown eye, one blue?”

He nodded. Heather’s eyes filled. Crispin—she had been so afraid it had been too long, too late. She had known the odds of getting Crispin back had been far too low.

“Wearing the same clothing reported by her sister. She’s asked to be brought here to FCGH, where her mother and sister and cousins work.” He hesitated. “The Value sheriff stated that she’s sleeping. She has a boy of approximately three years old with her. We are trying to identify him now.”

Heather couldn’t talk. The tears were too thick. They had Crispin back. They had Crispin. She had known the odds of getting her niece back, but… “Thank God. We have Crispin back.”

“All of our little boys are accounted for, though. We only have three, and two of those are ten and eleven,” Hope said quietly. “What about Bonnie?”

“Major Crimes and other responders are approximately fifteen minutes from the location given on Penelope’s tracking device. Sydney’s…was found on your niece. And she reported speaking with Sydney at the old Coleson estate, where they had both been taken.”

Heather held out hope—if they had found Crispin alive after so many hours, and this other girl was still alive as well… “There is a chance Bonnie’s there as well.”

“Yes. Right now, I just don’t know. ETA on your niece is a little over an hour. But she was walking and talking. She’s got a few minor injuries, Heather. But…she’s going to be ok. And we know Sheriff Lake was already there, at least forty-five minutes ago. He’s a bit of a cowboy, but he’s very good at what he does.”

“We’ll be waiting downstairs in the lobby when Crispin gets here.” Heather hesitated, as she looked at her family. “Does she know about her mother? They are extremely close.”

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

Heather looked at her family after he stepped aside to talk to a group of men and women who had just entered the cafeteria from somewhere. “They are bringing Crispin in. We are going to be there waiting. Coleson style.”

Colesons took care of Colesons. No matter what.
