Zoey didn’t knowif she was supposed to be angry.

The butt. He’d tricked her. He and that evil twin brother of his. They’d pay. She’d make certain of it. As soon as she figured out how.

“What are you really doing here?” she asked as soon as they were outside near the fountain at the rear of the Barratt-Finley Creek’s small inner courtyard.

“Seriously. Rumor has it I could be replacing Charlie Fields with Major Crimes. If I’m a good boy. I was trying to be a very good boy but then the governor’s extra hot sister-in-law danced by with my nerd brother, now I’m a little drooly. She’s very distracting. I had to save Anthony from her clutches. He’s too innocent for her. She can just clutch me instead.”

“Can it with the flirting. We both know you don’t mean it.” He hadn’t flirted with her when they’d been partners. Not even once. This…wasn’t the status quo right now. No wonder he’d rattled her. “What are you up to?”

“This. Look at me.”

Then his hands were around her waist, and she was being lifted off her feet and pulled against that chest. His hand cupped her neck, scorching her skin. His heat surrounded her, his chest pressed to hers. His arms were tight and strong around her.

“Murdoch, what are you doing?” This time the question came out breathless and just not likeher.

Her fingers flexed on the arms of his tuxedo. With the heels she’d worn, he still had a good four inches on her. Tall, strong, hard as a rock beneath her palms.

Hell. He had done something to her sanity in that graveyard.Changedsomething.

Zoey had always hated change. But this time…

“I’ve decided to just go for it while I can. Before you kill me, anyway. What do youthinkI’m doing? I am kissing the seriously hot lady in the red dress under the moonlight. I figure I’ll probably never get another chance. Especially if the Major Crimes boys don’t like me and I’m kicked back down to Garrity forever.” He ran his fingers up her spine.

Zoey forced herself not to react.

“What?” This was insane. This wasMurdoch.

“Hell, maybe it was the wine at dinner, but I’ve found I want to misbehave with you. I always have, you know. However, you deserve far better than to have me slobbering all over you. This is the world you play in now—and I’m the pickup football in the backyard kind of guy. But tonight, I just can’t help myself. Kiss me, Zo. For real this time. And make me the happiest man on the planet. What’s the worst thing that could happen? We bothlikeit or something?”

Oh, there was definitely a challenge there.

Then his mouth was on hers.

Her breath caught.

Or maybe she just forgothowto breathe for a moment.

His hands pulled her even closer.

Her lips tingled. Actually tingled. She could smell him, taste him, feelhim.

The man seriously knew how to kiss. There was no denying that. She wanted to stay right where she was. As long as forever.

He feltreal.

Morerealthan anything had felt in almost fourteen months. Longer. Forever, it had to be forever. What had he done to her?

* * *

Murdoch held his woman close, enjoying himself while he absolutely could. He wished she could be his forever.

But watching her twirling around the dance floor had just shown him how different their worlds would become soon. He’d watched her dance with all those guys before she’d gotten captured by Anthony. She had looked expensive and untouchable and like perfection.

Like a billionaire’s pampered younger sister.

Or like a rich man’s wife.

Whirling around in the arms of rich men old enough to be her father. There were polished and wealthy men everywhere. Many had watched her, wanted her. They could give her everything Murdoch couldn’t.
