Could walk with her through this rich-people world far better than he ever could.

Murdoch was as polished as a lump of coal. He wasn’t a fool.

He had a cop’s salary and a few investments for his retirement someday. After he put in his twenty years with the TSP—he was almost three quarters of the way there now—he’d find something in the private sector until he retired for good. He’d make do, never want for anything important. He was good with that.

It was a nice, bland, normal guy kind of life.

This crowd just reinforced that. Still…

He had the woman he adored in his arms right now. How could he not at least take advantage of that for a little while?

He trailed one hand up the bare skin of her back.

And started pulling the pins out of her hair one by one.

Zoey triedto step back the instant she realized what the man was doing. But it was too late.

Her hair was destroyed.

There would be no hope of fixing it now. The jackass.

She seriously contemplated kicking him for that. “Murdoch, damn it. It took over an hour for Lucy to put my hair up tonight.”

“I don’t like it up. It doesn’t look likeyou.” He buried his hands in her hair, and the hungry way he looked at her in the low light of the garden surrounding them had her stilling.

Oh,damnhim.

That’s when it sank in fast.

She wanted him to kiss her again.

She wanted to feel that rush of heat again. The hesitancy of not knowing what would happen next. The excitement. The burn of this man’s hands on her skin, her body. All of it. She wanted all of it.

With Murdoch.

This completely aggravating man had just made her feelaliveagain.

Like she had before the shooting. Before she just sort of started going through the motions day by day. “You’re a complete ass.”

When he laughed and scooped her close, Zoey just let him.

Again.

She wasn’t certain if he leaned closer to her—or she leaned up toward him. But their mouths were meeting again.

His arms were holding her close again.

Every inch of her was pressed to every inch of him again.

And she wantedmore.

Far, far more. Again and again.

They were both adults—they knew what fire they were playing with now. They didn’t come up for air for a long, long time.

He pulled away first. “So, what have you been up to? Find anything else for your little list?”
