I also have the worry that he might get released early because of the people he knows and his importance to them as one of the best drug traffickers. Those words in my head sound so wrong, and I remember how he lied to me, telling me he was into doing up cars.

By the time I found out the truth, I was in too deep. Sometimes, it feels like I’ve lived several lifetimes. I don’t feel like I’m only twenty-six. I would believe it more if someone told me I was actually sixty-two.

“I didn’t mean to upset you.” Dad places his hands on his lap.

“It’s okay. I just need you to remember that things between Sasha and me didn’t end well for several reasons.”

“I know. I just wanted to see you happy. That’s all.” He nods. “I’m working on something that might change things soon.”

I smile and try to look enthusiastic. It’s not the first time I’ve heard this. Every year, he does something else. He has a genius mind, but nothing he’s come up with has ever been quite as good as the designs that were stolen.

“What are you working on?”

“A piece of software open-world computer gamers will find useful. Maybe this idea of mine could be my game changer.”

“That would be great.” At least I sound like the dutiful, supportive daughter I’ve always strived to be.

“Yeah. Here’s hoping it could be better than what I did in the past. I’d just need the funding, though.”

Sadness fills his face. The same sadness I witness when he talks about the designs he and his team created that were stolen. Those ideas went into making an antivirus software now used by major companies and governments worldwide. It was developed by the competing company, who eventually bought out Dad’s old company.

“I’m sure you’ll get the funding.”

“I hope so.” He grins with pride. “Come on, let’s eat this pie and watch one of our classic films. I think that will make you smile.”

“It will,” I agree and smile just to humor him.

The rest of the time we spend together, I try to keep my nerves from overriding my mind. Not hearing from Jericho doesn’t help.

I get home at three to find a big box of bright yellow roses sitting on my bed.

As no one I know would send me these types of flowers, my mind goes straight to him.

I open the little envelope tucked into the side and take out the note.

It is from Jericho and says:

I’m sorry about last night and for tonight, too.

I’m not able to make it, but I think it’s for the best.

It was good to see you. I hope everything works out for you, but if you need me, you know where to find me.

You deserve the best, River,

Always,

J

I gaze at the note, my hands shaking. After last night, I had a feeling he would cancel, but getting the confirmation makes me feel worse.

Gina approaches the door and smiles at me.

“Please tell me those are from someone special,” she beams.

I stare back at her wishing I could tell her the truth. She knew about Jericho way back when, but telling her about him now will lead to my other secrets she doesn’t know, about me working at Club Edge.

“No,” I decide to say. “It’s just from work.”
