I let out a huff that turns into a scoff that turns into a giggle that bursts free from between my lips.

“Uh… have you seen me walk?” I blurt. “And you want to put me on a snowboard and send me careening down a slippery, snowy hill at forty miles an hour?”

He laughs at my antics and shakes his head before straightening his expression to one of gentle seriousness.

“I’ll teach you.” He says it with the most sincere expression—mouth in a straight line, eyes focused right on me.

“You… want to teach me… to snowboard?”

“I’d love to,” he affirms.

I cackle at his insane idea. “I’ll kill us both.”

“No, you won’t. You never know. You might be more graceful boarding than you think. You might be a natural.”

My accident-prone ass? I think not.

“Just think about it,” he insists. “If you don’t want to, we’ll get to know each other like a normal couple and go to dinner.”

Couple?

“Okay.” Warmth seeps into my cheeks, despite the morning chill.

“Okay.” He gives me a panty-dropping smile before closing my door for me.

CHAPTER4

Gwen

“What’s the matter, butt snack?” Dolores asks in a grandmotherly tone from the plush purple chair opposite mine.

“Where do I start?” I hold my latte close to my chest with both hands. Mine’s in a to-go cup, even though I’m hanging out in the café. With my laptop present, it’s better for me to have a lid.

“Mr. Glasses with the Ass hasn’t called you?” She chances a guess while reaching in her inside coat pocket.

“For starters,” I mutter before sipping my hazelnut latte and setting it down.

“Fuckwad won’t leave you alone?” She tries again, producing a small bottle of Jameson from her pocket.

“That too.” I glance between the Craigslist and eBay windows I have open in front of me. The dipshit left a bouquet of flowers by my apartment door yesterday instead of a bouquet of hundred-dollar bills to cover the cost of the stupid snowboard he bought with my money.

“And you can’t sell his snowboard?” She doesn’t look up from her task of dumping a sailor’s dose of whiskey into her coffee.

“I’m getting nary a nibble on these sites,” I supply.

“Sue him.” She sits back with her now Irish coffee and props her Steve Maddens on the dainty ottoman in front of her.

“Even taking him to small claims court would be more struggle than it’s worth.”

“Dead beat. So take cutie up on his offer. Take that fancy new board out on the slopes with a hot nerd who’s probably more skilled than Scott on the slopesandin the sheets.” She nods once.

While I’ve considered this countless times over the last three days, I’m afraid of making a fool out of myself even more than I already have. Besides…

“It’s been three days, and he hasn’t called me.” I pull up yet another window to check my email. I need more editing jobby-jobs to make up for the money assface spent. “He probably had an epiphany after he dropped me off at my car. He put a drunk, clumsy girl up for the night, and now he’s regretting it.”

“Which was a big move.” Dolores tilts her head and gives me a pointed look, then sips her spiked coffee. “Maybe he’s waiting for you to make a big move of your own.” She shrugs.

I start to shake my head before her words sink in.
