Kye went to get up from his seat, but this time, I was going to stop him, and if that meant me grabbing his hand, then that was what I was going to do. As he placed his hand on the desk to help himself up, I immediately placed mine over it. To my relief, he didn’t flinch away, just looked down at our hands.

“Kye, look at me.”

I waited until he raised his eyes.

“Thank you. Thank you for trusting me with that. I know it took a lot to tell me, but it does make a lot of sense to me why you are the way you are. Why you have become the man you have. I can’t admit to knowing what it feels like to go through that, but if you ever need to talk about it again, I’ll always be here for you. I can tell it has made you both stronger and more vulnerable, but you need to put that to rest now. You have a gorgeous fiancée and two beautiful children, and are the envy of most men out there. Remember that, and not what happened in the past. Just look forward.”

I removed my hand, and Kye gave me a smile. I was closer to this man than I had been in a long time, probably ever, and I would never tell a soul what he had said in the office. Not even Daniel.

“I’ll let you get on. Let me know if you need any help. Things are quiet on my end.”

“Will do.”

With that, he got up from his chair and walked out of my office, closing the door behind him and leaving me with a happier outlook on life, knowing the one man I worried about at Kings not only accepted me for who I was, but had entrusted me with a secret he had kept for years.

Chapter Twelve

Ryan

Istill didn’t know how Kevin had convinced me to get involved in his plan. I was happy enough to produce a fake will for him, but the idea of calling the police, even anonymously, didn’t exactly fill me with joy. I had already given Kevin the will, ready for him to hide when he went back into Katherine’s house.

All I had to say was the money he was offering was too good to turn down, and that was the only reason I was doing this.

I had refused to get involved with the murder of Katherine. If he didn’t want to do that, then he could find someone else. I knew a man who could get hold of the best and had passed his details onto Kevin, but I wasn’t sure if he would contact him or not. Even if he did, I wasn’t sure if Max would know anyone that would kill a woman, let alone one who was pregnant. I was thinking that Kevin would have to do the deed himself, and I wasn’t exactly sure if he was man enough.

I had everything planned out. I had a burner phone that I was going to use to call the police, along with a voice modulation program to disguise my voice. There was no way they would be able to trace it back to me. It paid to know people on the wrong side of the law, and I was able to get just about everything I wanted. All I had to do was call them and give them all the information that Kevin had asked me to give. I knew an informant for the police, and he had given me the number directly to one of the best detectives in the Met, Callum Stevenson.

I dialled the number, hoping that he would be the one to answer the phone.

“Detective Stevenson here.”

I took a deep breath and started to talk.

“I have some information you might be interested in, detective.”

“Who is this?”

I knew he would try to get as much information out of me as possible, but I was ready for him. He would also try to keep me on the phone as long as possible to try to trace my whereabouts. He would be going around in circles for hours before he got within forty miles of me.

“Who I am doesn’t matter. Let’s just say I am a very concerned citizen who wishes to help in a possible murder case.”

“Go on.”

I could tell that I hadn’t quite gotten his attention yet, that he could put the phone down at any moment.

“I wanted to let you know about Katherine Cooper. If anything should happen to her, then I wanted to let you know as much as possible so you can arrest her husband.”

“And why would you do that?”

Another stalling tactic. He must have realised by now that he wasn’t going to find me that easily. If I had been using a normal mobile phone, he would have traced me by now.

“As I said, I’m a concerned citizen. I know that Katherine and her husband, Daniel, had a major argument the other night, and I am also aware that she is pregnant, possibly with another man’s child. I also know that Katherine wrote a will not long ago. Should anything happen, you need to find that will.”

I could tell that I had his attention now. I just needed to carry on.

“If anything happens to Katherine, find the will and investigate Daniel. He hated his wife and would do anything to get her out of his life. He will be the one to have done it.”

“How do I know you are telling the truth and you aren’t behind it yourself?”
