I agreed to meet then and shook his hand.

“Am I okay to get my things from my room, or do you need an officer to bring them down?”

“I’ll go with you.”

I followed Detective Stevenson up the stairs. I suspected that they would have already gone through all my bags, making sure I wasn’t hiding any evidence. As I walked into my bedroom, I noticed that there were indeed two police officers just closing my bags. I saw Detective Stevenson give me a look of apology.

“It’s fine, Detective Stevenson. I would expect you to check everything. I will explain what I was doing when I meet you this afternoon.”

He gave me a nod of acknowledgment, and I picked up my cases and headed to my car to drive back to London.

I had a feeling that what had happened today would have a massive impact on my life, and I wasn’t sure if I would make it out the other side the same man I had been this morning when I got up.

Chapter Fifteen

Richard

Ihad met with the team this morning, and we were currently working through Daniel’s case. Kye had decided to tag along to the meeting, as he had nothing on and wanted to help as much as he could until he got another job. I was kind of thankful for his help, if I was honest. I had very little experience in managing a team and was starting to doubt my own abilities. I had sent one of the junior staff to stake out Daniel’s house to see if he could catch anyone going in there. He was going to keep us updated throughout the afternoon.

I started to look into the financial records of both Daniel and Katherine. It seemed as though I was encroaching on Daniel’s privacy by doing it, but he knew I would be the one to look and he wasn’t bothered by it at all. Kye had gone off to see what he could find out about Kevin Wright, the ex-fiancé of Katherine, so it was just me in my office. I started with Daniel and Katherine’s joint account. As soon as I opened up the details, I was shocked to see the amounts of money that had been transferred. Thousands of pounds had disappeared within about two hours.

Money had been slowly leaving the account, but suddenly, today, nearly fifty thousand pounds had gone. As I sat there looking, the balance went down again by another twenty thousand pounds. The way things were going, there wouldn’t be anything left by the end of the day. I was just about to call Jayden into my office when there was a quick knock at the door and Kye walked in.

“I’m glad you’re here. I was just going to call Jayden in. What do you make of this?”

Kye walked around my desk and looked at my screen. “Something isn’t right here, Richard. These amounts of money shouldn’t just be disappearing like that. I know you’ve only known Daniel for a couple of days, but I’m sure he would have mentioned if he was going to be transferring money, knowing you would be looking into it. I’ve also reached out to one of my contacts, and he doesn’t have a good word to say about Kevin Wright. He’s currently trying to track him down, but he seems to have disappeared. He is looking into things further, but there is something about him and this situation I don’t like. I think we should call Jayden in on this as well.”

I was starting to get worried about the way Kye was talking. Was Daniel in any kind of trouble? Could Kevin be out to hurt him, and in return, me? I could feel the panic starting to rise as my heart beat faster and my breathing increased. I was surprised to feel a hand rest on my shoulder and turned to see it was Kye.

“I’m sure Daniel will be fine. Nothing my contact has indicated to me would show that Kevin is a violent man. Greedy, but not violent. The money disappearing from the account would be his style, but nothing else. Let’s get Jayden down to look.”

I gave Kye a slight smile and nodded in agreement. Three heads were better than one, and I could use all the help they would give me. I was starting to understand how different it was when you were looking out for someone you loved. It was easy to make decisions about someone else’s lover; you could see the bigger picture. But when it was close to home, all rationale went out the window. I gave Jayden a call and asked him to come down to my office. It wasn’t long before we heard his footsteps coming down the hallway and he walked in.

“What’s up, Richard?”

“Come and take a look at this.”

He walked around the desk and studied the account transactions on my screen. All the guys in Kings could easily look things up like this and didn’t need my help. What Tyler and I tended to look into more was where the money was going, but that could take days or even weeks to unravel, even with our knowledge. I suspected Kye could do this a lot quicker, especially with his knowledge of the dark web.

“I’m guessing both of you suspect something is going on.”

I turned to Jayden and replied. “Well, yes. I’m sure Daniel would have mentioned something if he was going to start moving money out of the joint account. Plus, I already checked whether it was going to either of the private accounts, and it isn’t.”

Jayden and Kye walked back around to the front of the desk, and both sat down. We all sat there in silence for a moment, contemplating the situation.

Kye was the first to speak. “Is it worth checking with Daniel? Just to make sure he isn’t transferring out to an account he hasn’t told us about?”

It was worth a try. It was nearly four in the afternoon, so I was guessing that he would have nearly finished work. I pulled out my phone and dialled his number. The phone continued to ring for a while before going to voicemail. I decided it wasn’t important enough to leave a message, so I hung up the phone.

“He must be busy. He isn’t answering his phone. I’ll try him again later. Meanwhile, I will start to trace where the money is going. Unfortunately, that could take a couple of days depending on how well it has been covered, but at least we will have a place to start.”

Jayden nodded his head in agreement as Kye spoke again.

“I’m going to see what more I can find out about Kevin Wright. Before you ask, Jayden, don’t. This is one of those times you don’t want to know what I am doing. I will head home and look. That way you have complete deniability of what is going on.”

I could see the worried look come over Jayden’s face. We all knew what Kye was capable of, even more than me. But I also knew that it worried the hell out of Jayden at times. Not just because he didn’t want it coming back on the company, but also because he wanted to protect Kye.

“Kye, you don’t need to do anything for me. I don’t want you opening yourself up to any kind of trouble. I’m sure—”
