“Richard, I would do this for anyone. I’m not about to get myself into trouble. Remember, I’ve been around the block a few times now. It will be fine. You concentrate on finding where that money is going. I’ll see you both in the morning.”

Just as Kye was going to get up and leave the office, my phone started to ring. I looked down and saw it was from Paul, the young guy I had sent to stake out Daniel's house. Placing the phone on speakerphone, I answered his call.

“What do you have, Paul?”

All of the team knew the situation between me and Daniel. I hadn’t wanted to keep anything from them, so it shouldn’t have surprised me when Paul hesitated with what he was about to tell me.

“Richard, is anyone else with you?”

Jayden replied before I got a chance. “I’m here with Kye as well. What’s wrong, Paul? You sound worried.”

I could hear Paul take a deep breath—to calm himself, if I were to take a guess—before he continued.

“I don’t want to worry you, Richard, but Daniel’s house is swarming with police. I haven’t seen Daniel there, but I have only just arrived. It also looks like SOCO and the forensics team have just turned up.”

Panic set in quickly. Kye had assured me that Kevin wasn’t a violent person and couldn’t hurt Daniel, but I was now starting to worry, especially as I couldn’t get hold of Daniel. I could feel my heart rate increase as the worry I was feeling started to take over my whole body. I just sat there staring at the phone, not saying a word.

“Richard, are you there?”

I could hear Paul talking to me, but nothing seemed to be registering in my brain. I just sat there, not moving, staring at the phone.

“Paul, it’s Jayden. Just see what you can find out. I’ll speak to Richard. He’s just a little shocked at the news, and we can’t get hold of Daniel. If you can’t find anything out, I suggest you call it a day. With all those police there, I’m sure that we aren’t going to catch Mrs. Cooper in the act.”

“Sure thing, Jayden.”

Paul must have hung up the phone at that point, because the room was silent again. I continued to sit there staring at the phone. Any moment, I hoped it would start ringing and Daniel’s name would appear.

“Richard.”

I finally looked up to see both Jayden and Kye looking at me with concerned looks on their faces.

“I’m sure Daniel is alright. He may be with the police now, so can’t answer his phone. Why don’t you head off home? If Daniel phones, I will get him to call you. I’ll also let you know if I hear anything about what’s going on at his place.”

I was still in a state of shock.

Did I really want to go home and spend the rest of the afternoon worrying about what was happening to Daniel?

If I stayed here, would I actually get any work done?

I continued to look at my colleagues sitting in front of me with a blank expression on my face. Kye must have gotten up from his seat and placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Richard, you need to snap out of this daze. I’m not sure you are going to do any good sitting there, but I’m also worried about you going home on your own. Do you want me to send Kelsey home with you? She can sit with you until Nathan comes and gets her.”

I finally took in what was being said to me and looked over at Kye standing next to me.

“I think you’re both right. I’m not going to do any good sitting here. In fact, I’m liable to do some damage looking into things. I should be okay at home. I’m sure I can find something to keep me busy. But will you let me know if you hear anything, please? I will keep trying to get hold of Daniel and will let you know as soon as I hear anything.”

I looked over at Jayden as I was speaking. I was sure that any information would come through him, and I knew he would tell me as soon as he heard.

He gave me a small smile as he replied. “Of course I will, Richard. Now you get yourself home. But leave that laptop there. I don’t want you working tonight, please. Go home and get some rest, nothing more.”

Jayden got up from his seat and headed out of the office, leaving me there with Kye. There would have been a time that this would have worried the hell out of me, but after our chat the other day, I had a far better understanding of the guy. Greater respect for him, knowing what he had been through.

He gave me a slight smile. “I know how you’re feeling right now, but I’m sure Daniel is fine and you will speak to him soon. I’m going to continue to work with my contact on finding out as much as I can about Kevin Wright. I have a feeling we are going to need to know as much as we can about him. Something tells me everything is going to revolve around him. I’ll let you know if I find anything out. Now, get yourself home and try to rest up and stop worrying.”

“Thanks, Kye. I appreciate all your help today.”

I really did. All the times I had thought I couldn’t approach him, that I was sure he hated me for some reason, meant nothing now. I knew I could rely on him and talk to him if I needed to. Kye gave me a pat on the shoulder as he went to leave the room.
