We were just walking back into the office after our break. It was good to get out of the office for a while, and as no one had wanted anything brought back, we actually decided to sit down and eat for a change. I knew we should have been working, but we both needed the break, and I was sure that Jayden wouldn’t complain too much. He was quite an easy-going boss. As long as we got the job done, he really didn’t mind what hours we kept, especially as we were all now partners in the business.

The time away from the office was certainly both beneficial and required for me. I was still worried about the situation, but I now had a clearer head and thought I might actually be able to concentrate on the job at hand instead of just sitting there and staring at the screen. We walked back into the office and were greeted by a smiling Jacky. It appeared that she approved of our time away from the office, and she gave a slight nod when we walked past her and back to my office. I decided I would get us both another coffee to keep us going for the afternoon, so I spoke to Tyler as he continued up the corridor.

“I’m just going to grab us a coffee. Be along in a minute.”

Tyler gave me a quick hand in the air as an acknowledgment, and I walked into the kitchen.

I was just about to put the first cup under our pod machine when I heard someone shout “Yes!” from down the corridor.

I rushed out of the kitchen and down to my office hoping that the shout had come from Tyler. Just as I ran into my office, I crashed into Tyler, who was just coming out.

“I’m sorry, Tyler. Have you found something?”

He had a massive grin on his face and looked as excited as a toddler who just received a massive present.

He placed his hands on my shoulders. “We’re in.”

He quickly turned around and headed back to sit down at his desk. I followed and stood behind just as Jayden and Nathan walked into the office.

“I take it we have some good news?”

I turned and looked at Jayden and was about to reply when Tyler spoke.

“Well, I have managed to get into the original security feed, so we just need to see what was originally there.”

We all stood there as Tyler ran through the feed for the day of Katherine’s murder. We decided to start with the camera on the front door. As we suspected, there was nothing until Daniel came through the door, but looking at the timestamp on the video, it was two o’clock, almost three hours after the one the police had. We then moved to the camera at the back door, but that was totally black.

“Well, that was a dead end.” I looked over at Tyler as I spoke.

He didn’t seem surprised by the fact that the camera wasn’t working.

“Don’t get too disheartened yet. We still have the camera in the hallway outside the bedrooms.”

We continued to watch the feed from the upstairs hallway and saw a man walking towards one of the bedrooms and through the door. The time was just before eleven o’clock on the feed, and that would have given this person plenty of time to commit the murder. Unfortunately, from the way the camera faced, you could only see the back of the person. I pulled out Kevin’s photo from the file we had on the desk.

“I can’t be sure if that is Kevin or not. We need to look at when whoever it is leaves the room.”

We carefully moved the footage forward at a slightly quicker pace to get through the dead footage. It was nearly one o’clock when we saw the person leave the room.

“Freeze it there, Tyler.”

Tyler immediately stopped the footage, as we saw the face as clear as day. It was Kevin. From the look on his face, he was flustered and worried. But what was more noticeable was that his hair was wet as if he had just had a shower.

“I think it is time for me to call Callum,” Jayden said to all of us as he got his phone out of his pocket and dialled. “Callum, I think we have something you will want to see.”

Chapter Thirty

Daniel

Ihad been here in prison for two days now, and I was already a marked man. I could understand now why I had been put into solitary confinement. In here, it didn’t matter if you were innocent because according to each inmate they were innocent, even though the judge had said they weren’t. However, in my case, my accused crime was so appalling that I had to be guilty.

For the first time, yesterday afternoon, I had gone out into the exercise yard. There had only been five inmates in the area plus me, but it immediately became obvious what was going to happen if it hadn’t been for the guards keeping an eye on me. The events of yesterday were the scenes in my nightmares last night, and I remembered them vividly.

I had been led out into the exercise yard for the first time. I was surprised to see that there were other inmates in the area. I had assumed, as I was in solitary, that I wouldn’t mix with other inmates. We would each be brought out here individually and then taken back to our cells before the next inmate was brought out. I hesitated as I walked out into the yard.

Officer Richards must have sensed my reluctance, as he spoke. “Don’t worry, Daniel. They are trusted inmates. We wouldn’t put any of the ones that we think would cause you any problems here. But if you feel too uncomfortable, I can ask them to leave.”

I didn’t want to cause any problems while I was in here, and I didn’t want it to look as though I was getting any special treatment.
