I pulled up outside the hospital with the police van behind me. I was going to meet them back at the station to interview Kevin once I had gotten Daniel from prison. I had already contacted the hospital, so they knew I would be arriving and what I would be doing. We went through the staff entrance, away from the main reception area, so as not to upset other patients.

I walked into the corridor where Kevin was being held in a private room. I stepped inside his room and found him sitting up in bed, fully clothed, as though he was ready to go home. I had expected this, as I knew he was going to be released today, but after the phone call from Kye earlier, I had made sure the doctors delayed his release papers. Kevin looked up with hopeful eyes as I walked into the room, but they immediately turned to a look of anger when he saw it was me.

“I was hoping you would be one of the doctors. I’ve been waiting for over five hours for them to give me my release papers. If they don’t turn up soon, I’m going to walk out of here. Anyway, what do you want?”

I couldn’t help but smirk as he spoke to me in his annoyed and condescending tone. If he was annoyed now, he was about to get livid when I explained why I was here. I thought I would be just as sarcastic in my tone back when I spoke.

“Well,Kevin, I have just been having a little chat with Ryan Francis. You know, the guy who ran you off the road. He has been extremely helpful for the past couple of hours. It’s amazing what you find out from a person when you sit down and chat.”

I saw his face turn as white as a sheet as I mentioned Ryan’s name. I could guess what was going to come next before he even spoke.

“I think I should stay here, Detective Stevenson. I’m feeling slightly woozy. Perhaps I should stay for a couple more days.”

I knew exactly what he was trying to do: get me to leave so he could make a break for it.

Well, I was ready for that. I had already picked up his release papers from the nurse’s station as I walked past, and they had confirmed that Kevin was more than ready to leave the hospital. He had only stayed here this long because I had requested it. My smirk grew wider as I spoke.

“Kevin, I have your release papers in my hand, so I think you can leave, don’t you? I just have one more thing to say to you.” I paused, mainly for dramatic effect, and also, I was enjoying this too much. “Kevin Wright, I am arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Katherine Cooper, along with theft, fraud, and perverting the course of justice. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence. Officers, take him to the station. I will be along presently.”

I didn’t give Kevin a chance to say a word before I turned around and headed back down to my car. There was one thing I had to do before I interviewed Kevin. One thing that was far more important than this.

I pulled out my phone and dialled Richard’s number. “Richard, it’s Callum. Meet me outside your apartment in ten minutes.”

With that, I got into my car and started on my way to Richard’s apartment.

I had picked up Richard and was currently driving to Pentonville Prison, where Daniel was being held. I hadn’t explained a thing to him, and I could see that he was completely confused when I pulled into the gates of the prison.

“Callum, what are we doing here? It’s too late for visiting hours.”

A smile formed on my lips. He was right. It was also too late for prisoners to be released, usually. However, because I knew the governor so well, I had managed to get everything arranged. Hopefully, Daniel would be waiting inside, ready to be reunited with Richard.

“All will become apparent in a little while, Richard. Just wait here. I need to pop inside for a moment. I shouldn’t be too long.”

I got out of the car and headed towards the entrance of the prison. I knew I was being a little callous in the way I was treating Richard, but I wanted to surprise him. I had let Jayden know, and he was going to let the rest of the team know. As I approached the door, it was opened by a prison officer who was expecting me, and I stepped inside.

“Callum, good to see you again, and in better circumstances.”

I was shocked to be greeted by the governor of the prison, even though I had spoken to him before arriving.

“Edward, I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”

I held out my hand to shake his. We had met on several occasions now, both personal and work-related, and had become quite good friends over the years. In situations like this, it always helped.

“I have Daniel upstairs in my office. I thought it would make him a little more comfortable than sitting down here. Come on, I will take you to him.”

We walked along the corridor and headed up the stairs to Edward’s office. As I walked through the door, I found a rather dishevelled-looking Daniel sitting in the corner of the room. It amazed me how quickly he had changed from the man I had met on the day his wife had been murdered. I guessed keeping an innocent man in prison for a few days would do that.

I walked over to him and held out my hand as I spoke. “Are you ready to go home, Daniel?”

I saw the look on his face instantly change to one of pure relief and happiness.

“It’s true, then? They said that you got the evidence you needed to prove my innocence, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up only to find out it wasn’t true.” He got up from his seat and held his hand out to shake mine. “Thank you, Callum. I know you were only doing your job, but you have done more than you should have.”

“It’s not a problem, Daniel. Now, I think there is someone outside who’s eager to see you.”

I allowed Daniel a moment to thank both Edward and the two prison officers who had been looking after him for the past few days before we headed back downstairs and out of the prison doors for the last time. Well, at least we both hoped so.

As we stepped outside, I looked over to my car in the car park and could vaguely see Richard sitting inside. He must have looked up and seen Daniel, because the next thing I knew, he was running over to us and immediately engulfed Daniel in a hug.
