We walked into the bar and ordered ourselves a drink, then headed out onto the terrace where we were due to meet Ryan. Sure enough, as soon as we walked out, we spotted the driver of the car sitting over in the corner.

He had explained what he would be wearing to Zane, so it didn’t look suspicious when we started walking over to him. I let Zane walk a little way in front of me, as he had already been speaking to Ryan. We didn’t want to intimidate him to the point that he made a run for it, not that he would get very far.

Zane addressed him as he approached the table. “Ryan?”

He looked up at acknowledged Zane with a nod. “And you must be Zane, and I assume this is your business partner behind you.”

I gave him a nod as I went to sit down across from him, with Zane to my right. He had made one of the biggest mistakes he could make and placed himself behind the table, meaning that to get out, he had to come around us. He had also chosen a table right in the corner. It was plainly obvious that he was not an accomplished criminal, far more techie than savvy.

I looked over at Zane, and the look he gave me confirmed he felt the same as me. I decided that I was going to come straight to the point.

“Ryan, you are going to tell us exactly what your part was in the murder of Katherine Cooper.”

Instantly his face dropped, and he went to get up from his seat. But both Zane and I went to move to show him there was no way out. I was surprised when Zane spoke next. I had planned to do this all myself, but he had other ideas.

“Now, Ryan, I wouldn’t be so quick to try and get away if I was you. What about your wife, Charlotte? Or your children, Dean and Molly? Yes, I know all about them. One call, and I can have them taken from your house and you would never see them again.”

This was one thing that Zane had always been good at. I’d never had the stomach to bring family into the mix and always left those jobs to Zane. This was what I had been worried about. Zane’s conversation was bordering on the darkness that I had once felt, the darkness that I never wanted back in my life. I guessed that was why he had stepped in. He knew how far I would take things, and it was never as far as he would.

I looked at Ryan and saw he was as white as a sheet, unable to speak. I decided that I would coax him into a sense of security and play the nice guy for once in my life.

“Ryan, we know it was you driving the car that ran Kevin off the road. And that it was you who edited the video footage at Mr. Cooper’s house and of the accident. This is your chance, to be honest, and you might be able to agree to a plea bargain with the police. You know that Daniel Cooper didn’t murder his wife. Do you want to go down as an accessory to murder? Perhaps not see your wife and children again for a very long time?”

I saw a look of defeat come over his face as the realisation hit him, the exact reason we were here. He looked at Zane, who still had a cold sober face, and then over to me.

He shook his head and started to speak. “I should never have let Kevin talk me into this. I told him from the beginning that he was playing with fire, especially when I heard that Daniel had gone to King Brothers to get a divorce and then had started to go out with one of their employees. I’m guessing you are Kye?”

I looked up at him as he said my name. He knew more about us than we thought. I didn’t reply, just gave him a nod of my head.

“I’ve heard everything about you. I know you aren’t someone to be messed with. Your reputation precedes you. I guess it’s time to tell you everything.”

We sat there and listened as Ryan explained everything to us. Kevin had wanted to get back at both Katherine’s and Daniel’s families for taking the love of his life away from him. Katherine had promised Kevin that they just had to bide their time and then everything would be fine, but then she had gotten pregnant. She’d said she couldn’t keep the baby because Daniel would know it wasn’t his, as they had slept in separate bedrooms for their whole marriage.

“When Kevin told me his plan originally, it never involved murdering Katherine. If I’d known that was his plan all along, then I would never have agreed. The problem was, by the time I found out, I was too deeply involved to walk away. Kevin said he had enough evidence to make sure I would go down for a very long time.”

I had to admit that I did feel slightly sorry for Ryan. He had been pulled into Kevin’s plan up to his neck before he realised how deep he was. But now that we had the truth, all we had to do was to get him to speak to Callum, and then we would be able to reunite the two lovebirds and all would be right in the world again. I wasn’t sure if he would go for it, but I had to at least try. If he wouldn’t agree…well, I still had Zane with me to take the reins.

“Ryan, you know what I’m going to ask next, don’t you?”

He looked down at his clasped hands, and I saw a tear roll down his cheek. He nodded his head.

“I will come back down to London and speak to Detective Stevenson. You have all the evidence you need, so they would find me eventually. At least this way, I have a chance of a lesser sentence.”

Zane spoke again. “I think you have just made the best decision of your life.”

I pulled out my phone and called Callum.

“Callum, it’s Kye. I’m bringing someone down to speak to you. I’ll be there in about four hours.”

Chapter Thirty-Two

Callum

Ihad asked Kye not to contact any of the Kings team when he had called me earlier. I had been slightly shocked when he walked into the office with a gentleman that I now knew as Ryan Francis, along with a USB memory stick that contained the actual footage of the accident that Kevin Wright had been involved in.

After the telephone call from Jayden, I had already contacted the hospital where Kevin was currently being treated, along with the police officer who was there, and told them not to release Kevin until I arrived there. But I was then held back to interview Ryan. We had agreed to a lesser charge of perverting the course of justice, as he had not been directly involved in the murder of Katherine. He had also given us all the information and evidence that we needed to be able to prosecute Kevin Wright for the murder, fraud, and perverting the course of justice.

I had just finished interviewing Ryan and was now heading towards the hospital with several police officers. I had already contacted the judge and gotten him to speak to the governor of Pentonville Prison, and he was going to put everything in place for me to go and collect Daniel once I had arrested Kevin.
