Well, the fact that they had a receptionist answering the phone must have meant they were a busy company. I expected most PI companies to be just a couple of guys doing everything in the business.

“Good morning. I was wondering if it was possible to speak to someone about an investigation I would like done. I believe my wife is having an affair, and I need proof so I can get a divorce.”

“That’s not a problem. Let me take a look at when I can get you an appointment with Mr. King.”

Wow. Now I was impressed. I would actually get to speak to one of the owners. I listened as the receptionist checked the diary on her computer. It wasn’t long before she came back onto the phone.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting. Mr. King can see you this afternoon at two o’clock, if you can make it.”

“That would be perfect.”

The sooner I could get this sorted, the sooner I could move forward with a chance at a relationship with Romeo.

“If I could just take a few details from you.”

I went through all the details that were required and confirmed that I would be at the offices this afternoon. We said our goodbyes and ended the call. I had made the first move to start the rest of my life. I just hoped that when I spoke to Romeo on Friday, he would still feel the same way about me as he did last night.

I arrived at King Brothers’ offices just before two and headed into the reception area. I was greeted by the receptionist who I must have spoken to earlier this morning.

“Good afternoon. My name is Jacky. Welcome to King Brothers Investigation Services. How can I help you.” She seemed just as nice and cheery in person as she had on the phone.

“Good afternoon, Jacky. I have an appointment with Mr. King at two o’clock. Apologies, I’m early, but I wasn’t sure how long it would take to get here.”

“Mr. Cooper, I presume. That’s not a problem. Please take a seat and I will let Mr. King know you are waiting.”

I heard her call through to Mr. King as I sat down and waited for him to meet me. I had only just about sat down when a man who I would have said was in his mid-thirties walked out to greet me.

“Mr. Cooper, I’m Jayden King, one of the owners of King Brothers. Pleased to meet you. If you would like to follow me.”

I followed him into the office he indicated. He followed behind me and closed the door.

“Please take a seat, Mr. Cooper.”

I always hated the formality of introductions, so decided to get him to call me Daniel. I found it made conversations far easier.

“Please call me Daniel, Mr. King.”

“Daniel it is, and please call me Jayden. So, I can see from the information you provided Jacky this morning that you are looking for us to prove your wife’s infidelity. Would you like to go through everything with me? Just so I can have a better understanding of the situation.”

I sat there and went through everything. Well, all except the real reason I had married her. I wasn’t ready to explain that I was gay and had been forced into the marriage. I would only tell that to Romeo when we spoke on Friday. There were still a few things that I was embarrassed about, and the state of my life was one of them. I told him about the video evidence I had of Kevin Wright coming and going from the house. However, it wasn’t enough to prove that Katherine was having an affair with him. Even I hadn’t gone as far as installing cameras in our bedrooms. They were mainly on the main entrances to the house.

I watched Jayden as I explained my story to him. I could tell he wasn’t completely buying it, but I hoped he believed me enough to take the job on. I finished my explanation and waited for Jayden to speak. He sat there for what seemed like an eternity before he said a word. I was starting to worry that he was going to sit there and say, “Thank you for coming to see me, Daniel, but I don’t think we can take your job on.”

To my surprise, though, that was the exact opposite of the words that came from his mouth.

“I think we can help you, Daniel. Seems like a pretty easy job to me. What we tend to do is assign a senior partner to head up the investigation, and then they will allocate members of staff to each job as they see fit. Do you think your wife could be using any of the money in your account to pay Mr. Wright? Or perhaps buying him any gifts?”

I sat there and thought for a while. I had to admit that I didn’t keep a close check on our joint account. I really had no need to because I had my own separate account that Katherine had no idea about. That was where I had my salary and bonus paid. I then set up a monthly transfer to place half of my wages into the joint account. She had no idea how much I actually earned as a partner in the business. She actually thought I was just a junior stockbroker, so it was easy for me to hide my true worth.

“I guess it is possible. I don’t keep track of our joint account that well. I have a separate account that everything is paid into, and then I transfer money into our joint account once a month.”

I saw Jayden raise his eyebrows. I guessed it was strange for a married couple to have separate bank accounts these days. Most couples would just have one bank account, and if they did have separate ones, then the other knew about them.

“Okay, well, we will need the joint bank account details so we can run an investigation on them. Look for any strange transactions that are going through. It’s possible your wife could be giving money to Mr. Wright without your knowledge.”

I was pleased that Jayden hadn’t made any comments about the financial situation. I wasn’t sure how I would explain that. I made sure that the contract I signed only gave Katherine rights to the joint account. I had specifically requested that any accounts either of us already held would not be taken into account in any divorce settlement. I was sure that Katherine had her own account, but how much money she had in there, I had no idea. She had probably been siphoning off money from the joint account for years, which would be in breach of the contract, but unless I had that proof, there was nothing, I could do about it. At least if Kings could prove that, I had enough ammunition to get the divorce I wanted and start to live the life I deserved…with Romeo.

“Thank you, Jayden, but how would we prove that she is indeed having an affair and not just giving money away? I mean in fairness, giving money to Mr. Wright doesn’t prove they are having an affair, just that my wife is keeping him.”
