“Good, then we will have no problems.”

My father takes the paper with him, turning back to me when he’s at the door. “Take her to get new clothes. If I see one more dress like that…” He doesn’t finish his threat, choosing just to turn and leave.

“Stay here,Bruja,” I tell her, before standing and going after Marío.

I find him in his office on the second floor, the phone to his ear. I wait until he’s done speaking with whoever it is, possibly one of the generals by the way he orders the caller to fix an issue with shipments.

“What are you planning for Herrera?” I ask him once he hangs up. “I would like to know what you want from me.”

My father sits and stares at me. The look would have turned the hearts of other men, but it barely does anything to me now. I know how far I can push him.

“I will offer the playboy something he won’t be able to turn down.”

My brows furrow. “What is that?”

My father’s smile slices across his face, winking his eye at me. “When I’m ready to tell you, I will.”

Taking his bullshit answer for now, I turn and leave, but he stops me when I get to the door. “How is Vicenta?”

My chest freezes, my mind going straight to her body and moans.

I turn back with my mask in place. “She’s as docile as I knew she would be.”

He hums under his breath, his eyes narrowing, but I don’t break under his scrutiny.

“Do you want to explain to me why I am now sending monthly payments to Regio’s widowed wife and fatherless children?”

The guard's battered face flashed in my mind. “He mishandled her.” My voice comes out as a growl but I cover it up with the perfect excuse. “He should have known better than to lay a hand to your future wife’s face.”

As expected, my father nods his head in approval. “You are right. He was made an example of; the rest will follow. For now, take her shopping. I have business in Puerto Vallarta with Miguel.”

“Puerto Vallarta? What’s he doing there?” I ask, wondering what’s going on with the Acapulco judge on our payroll.

“He’s vacationing there but I’m interrupting that to remind him of who he works for. I’ll also have him start the paperwork for my future wife’s citizenship here. I’ll be gone for a few days. Call me if there’s any trouble.”

“Si, Jefe.” I nod sharply before leaving, eager to get out of his sights before he sees my true thoughts.

His future wife.

Vicenta will never be his wife, not if I have anything to do with it. My chest may have been hollow before meeting her, but now it is full of greedy hunger. I will not sit back and watchmyBrujamake vows of commitment to him. If it means I have to stall it or cause an incident, then so fucking be it, but she will not make it to the altar.

My anger at the image of her in white standing before him has the bridge of my nose twitching and my strides speeding up. I need to see her; I need to be back in her presence.

When I reach the kitchen, I call her name.

“Let’s go. Now.” I wait for her to stand, her eyes tightening at my tone.

She doesn’t know it’s directed at Marío, not her, but I honestly don’t care right now. All I can think of is getting her out of the same house as him. Getting her alone so I can remind her—and myself—who she now belongs to.

Fuck this cartel life, fuck the money and the status, and most of all, fuck Marío Banderas. If I have to rid thefamiliaof him, I will. I’ll rule in his place and make sure that the only person she’s ever dressed in white for is me. Vicenta will meet me at the end of the aisle, or she’ll meet no one at all, especially not my father.

Vicenta reaches my side by the time I’m outside, waiting on the valet to bring my car around from the garage.

“When I tell you to keep that perfect mouth shut, I fucking mean it,” I tell her without looking at her.

“I didn’t do anything I wouldn’t have done with my father.”

I turn to her then, my eyes burning in fury. “He’s not yourpincheputofather,Bruja. Get that through your head.El Jefe de Jefes, that’s what he is. Do you have any idea what I would have done if he had hurt you?”
