I roll my eyes at him but get up from the couch and do as he suggests. I grab a shot glass and fill it to the brim with Romero’s tequila before grabbing a water bottle and going back out onto the porch where no one can witness my nerves.

My heart stops when the gate down the drive opens and a black Ferrari F8 Spider pulls up to the house, followed by a couple of black SUV’s. None of the guards around the house seem to be concerned with the arrivals, but my mind still screams at the danger I’m facing.

Romero steps out of the car, a smile on his face when he sees me standing from the swing. I try to smile, but it feels like my face gets stuck somewhere between a grimace and a frown.

He huffs when he sees me struggling and cups my face. “I already know,Diabla. I told you I would not stop you from seeing him. I’m fighting for you not to choose him over me, but I don’t want you to be unhappy in the process.”

He says the words that Alvaro said, but I just wish I could explain to them how I can’t choose either of them over the other. They have me at a fork in the road and I’d rather turn around than pick a path.

I blow out a breath and nod, choosing silence over the screaming in my head. I let my eyes travel from his cleanly shaven face to the entirely black suit he’s wearing. The dress shirt tucked into his perfectly pressed slacks is unbuttoned almost all the way down to his navel, showing off all those sexy muscles and the white rosary beads underneath.

“Se ve muy guapo, Señor Herrera,” I tell him, letting him know he’s looking very handsome…as per usual, of course.

He kisses me quickly before scooping me up into his arms. “Ah, Diabla, eres mi debilidad.”

I wish he could see that it’s himandAlvaro that are my weaknesses, in equal amounts.

He takes me into the house, carrying me up the stairs and setting me on the bed where he settles himself between my thighs.

“I don’t want you to worry, Vicenta. Last night, I put my foot in my mouth, but I always learn from my mistakes. I’m not going to crowd you with my wants and needs because at the core of all my desires isyou. So long as I have you, even if it’s just your time, then I will be grateful for it. Alvaro and I have an understanding that we will not have a tug-o-war over you and we will respect the time you give to the other. I did demand that you stay on Herrera territory, though. I do not trust Marío, and I don’t want you outside of the safe zones.”

“Just like that?” I breathe as he kisses my neck, sucking my skin hard into his mouth.

When he lets it go with a pop, he looks back into my eyes. “Like I said,Diabla, you are my weakness. I’ll give you anything I can.”

He stands and pulls me up with him. “Now, you better get your ass changed for dinner before he starts honking like an asshole.”

He gives me a smile that genuinely reaches his eyes, but then his words register. “He’shere?”

His smile drops before he sighs. “Yes, but he won’t come inside. This place brings back too many memories of his mom. I have given him one of my properties to take you to anytime you’re with him and you have my number in your phone should you need me for any reason at all.”

I hesitate to move. “I don’t know what to say.”

He dips his head to catch my gaze. “Don’t say anything. Just kiss me goodbye and hurry back.”

I throw my arms around him and kiss him hard, pouring all my unspoken gratitude into it.

TWENTY-SIX

ALVARO

“I Love You, Either Way” by Tobi Bob Snoid

I stand at the base of the steps waiting for Vicenta to emerge from the house, my eyes on the swing she was sitting in when I arrived. The last time I was here, I sat with my mother there, watching the waves below. I wish that I knew then that it was the last time I’d ever look into her eyes.

“Alvaro?” I turn to the side of the house and spot Vicente coming around the corner. When he gets to me, we clap hands. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m taking your sister out for a little while.” I got to know Vicente pretty well while he stayed with me at my penthouse for a week. Granted, he didn’t get the best version of me considering I was mostly an angry bastard. Still, when he actually heard me out, listened to me when I told him my true feelings for his sister and what I planned to do to get rid of Marío, he turned out to be a pretty understanding guy. Of course, he wants to be the one to kill Marío but unfortunately, that is my job.

“Ah, like a custody battle. Nice.” He rolls his eyes, the sarcasm thick in his voice. “You guys gonna tear her in half too?”

I tilt my head, spreading my hands out to my sides. “What do you expect me to do, Vicente? I’m in love with her, but so is Romero.”

He claps me on the shoulder. “Why don’t you ask her what she wants? Give her the safe space she needs to be open and honest with her thoughts.”

I cock a brow at the younger Guzmán sibling. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, but how do you know you’re right?”

He shakes his head and steps away when there’s movement inside the house. “Do yourself a favor and look up ‘why choose.’ I’m not pimping my sister out like a fucking weirdo, but if you two are going to fight over her, I’d rather help than see her hurt during your dick measuring contest. So, I suggest you get in touch with your inner woman,güey.”
