“Look, Rollo, you’ve been through a lot. We all have. Dax is the Alpha. He is just looking out for you and the pack. And he’s right, go get that fucker Frederick, and then, if it’s real, these things you are feeling for her, which it seems it just might be, we can worry about a new nanny for you. Now, about an artist. Can you tell me what you’re thinking?”

“Well, I know she loves to paint. I guess it runs in her family. I don’t know, but I was thinking I could surprise her and get a tutor, or something…or maybe just set her up as an apprentice, or introduce her. I don’t know. I have no idea how art works. I just want her to know how I feel. Things were weird today and...I don’t know…” he trailed off.

“I think I understand better now. You’ve got it bad.”

“I’m just afraid maybe I screwed it up. I wish we could start over. The timing with her is just so bad.”

“Well, I don’t think the timing is ever really up to us. You just have to have faith it is all as it’s meant to be. Those are my deep thoughts on the matter at least.” She gave him another smile and a hug. “Look, I will ask around, and take care of everything so that you can focus on catching that bastard, and keeping everyone safe. Then we’ll worry about your love life, deal?”

His wolf seemed as confused as he was…wanting to go toherand protect, but wanting to rip the throat out of the one who threatened them.

Tension seized every fiber of his being.

“Okay, Bloom. Thank you, you’re a life saver. I was on the way to the Tribunal anyhow.”

“Anytime, Rollo. We are all together on this.” She headed back to her own pickup truck. “June’s gonna swing by here in a bit just to beef up the spells a bit too. I am helping with the search and trying to detect anywhere else he may have used a portal in town.”

“Understood, be safe.”

“You too.” With that, she backed out and was off.

He jumped in his Jeep, shaking his head. He knew he’d be fine once he got to the office, he was good that way. The hunt for Frederick was on. But his use of magic would have to be taken into account. The witches would be able to help and maybe there would be some counter to his powers.Hopefully.He could feel his focus settling in as he got into his truck and turned the key in the ignition. Maybe they would finally take care of Frederick once and for all.

They had to.

CHAPTER19

Winona made her way back inside. What else could she do? It definitely wouldn’t do to run at them screaming like a maniac. Though the thought had crossed her mind.

The boys had continued their coloring while she took up a position in an adjacent room that lent a view to the drive.Well, he’s not trying to hide it.

She couldn’t believe she’d gotten herself into such a vulnerable position. Something about him had wiped all the common sense out of her brain and left her a dumb, inexperienced girl again. Those eyes maybe. Maybe that’s what did it.She sighed as she continued to look out the window. No, there is something between us.She stopped herself. That’s what she tried to tell herself with Blake. He had made her feel so special. She’d learned that that was what shifters did, with all their talk of mates. It was all bullshit.

Too bad.

At least she had made some money.

But last night…God, last night. And then today he had been so strangely impersonal. There had been no touching, no kissing. Was it the kids? Whatever. She was concentrating on her breathing, trying to calm herself. She put her hand on her stomach to settle the butterflies in there.

Looking out the window, she saw another embrace. Her hand on his shoulder. Fuck this. She looked around for her phone.

Enough was enough.I don’t care how amazing last night was, or how real it felt. The guy is clearly unhinged and all over the place. Are you so pathetic that you can’t see it?

Jesus, she wished she had reception. She looked at her phone again. No signal.

What am I going to do? I can’t even leave. I don’t even know where I am, and regardless, I can’t leave the kids alone. If she could only talk to Julie, she knew she could get her head screwed on right.

Just then, she heard a voice downstairs, “Hello? Hey, boys. It’s your auntie June!”

Immediately, she heard cries of “Aunt June! Chocolate!”

“Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t bring any. I’m afraid I forgot…”

She made her way into the other room and greeted the newcomer, who stood there. She was a short stocky woman dressed in a sort of flowing dress that screamed “New Age.”

“Hello… I didn’t know we would be getting any visitors…”

“Oh. It was on short notice. Dax sent me over. He’s a friend of the boy’s father,” she explained.
