“Believe me, we’re going to get him, brother. You and me.”

“Amen, brother.”

“In the meantime, get things sorted with the kids. You have to be ready when the time comes.”

Rollo nodded and turned on his heel to head back home.

God knew he had plenty to sort.

* * *

Rollo setthe phone on the counter almost as if in a trance. The lead on Frederick from a few days ago was real.He let the news sink in. It had been corroborated by a few more sightings. At least that’s what his sources were telling him.

A ridiculously large gray wolf. And a horribly disfigured man. All in the same week.

It had to be real.

The guy had been on the loose, essentially terrorizing shifters and humans alike for what, three years now? Three very long years.

Hell, he had even fucked with the Fae. It seemed a foregone conclusion that he was the animal that had taken out Bloom’s father.

Nobody fucked with the Fae.Well, only the certifiably insane.

Same with the witches. All that magic shit freaked him out a bit.

No, thanks. Give me a good old-fashioned fight any day.

Before he had any time to think further, the phone rang again.

Dax.

“Hey boss.”

“You heard?” Yep, Dax was already aware, if his voice was any indication.

“Yeah. Looks like those Mossy Ridge rumors are looking less and less like rumor and more like facts, right?”Rollo asked. He had to make sure the intel was right.

“Tim just called me like two minutes ago. Some farmer kept losing cattle, and I guess, gathered up some neighbors. Best I can tell, they thought it was a wolf and went out to hunt it. Or they thought it wasjusta wolf, I should say. That didn’t work out too well, it seems. Two of those neighbors are dead.”

“Shit. My sources said there were other sighting too. God, I want it to be true, but how can we be sure it’s Frederick?” Rollo’s hand went through his hair.

“One of the men described him before he died. Said he looked like a demon with half a face and a hollow eye. It’s him.”

Rollo felt anger tighten his belly. “Son of a bitch. And they let him get away?”

“Well…they died, Rollo. There was no ‘letting’ about it,” Dax retorted.

“Dammit.” Rollo paused as he struggled to compose himself. They were close now. “Okay, yeah, you’re right. And I mean, they were half right about a wolf. Sometimes, I wish we could just tell the humans what’s up. If we had known, maybe we could have caught him! Maybe we could have prevented this.” He set his jaw as he thought about it.

“Coulda shoulda woulda, buddy. You know that’s a dark path. We don’t have to go over that. But I don’t want you doing anything crazy. I haven’t told Bloom yet just for that reason. Knowing her, she’ll head over to Mossy Ridge herself. I want her father avenged, but I’m sure that doesn’t compare to what you’re feeling,” Dax said in a measured voice.

“Well, he’s not getting away again. Not if I have anything to say about it. I swear it.” The last part he said as much to his dead brother as he did to Dax.

“I agree, but when we go after him, we do it as a pack. You got me? Everyone has been affected by that traitor.” He was practically commanding him. “You are too on edge to be of any help right now. Blow off some steam. Let your wolf run wild a bit maybe. If this were me, I’d be smashing shit down at the quarry since that’s my idea of good shifter therapy. And you live right there.”

Rollo let out a little laugh. “I’ll take it under consideration, but at the moment, I just have too much shit going on. Anyway, are we getting the boys together on this? Is there a plan yet?” Rollo asked.

“Yeah, man, looks like you’re definitely getting that meeting now. In the meantime, Tim and the Mossy Ridge Pack are on it. They know to contact us the minute there’s news. So far, though, he’s disappeared again. But don’t worry, everyone knows you have first dibs on Frederick after what he did. Of course, I am going to have to tell Bloom once we have something concrete.” Dax paused a minute. “Hey, give the boys a hug for me, okay? We’re close, Rollo. I can feel it. We’ll get them justice. For all of us.” With that, he hung up.
