“But, Daddy, you’re not going to play with us?” said Bucky, his excitement slightly muted by the news that his father wouldn’t be participating in their new game.

“Well, I am going to go get Winona, okay? I mean, unless you find her hiding here first?” he said as he scooped Bucky up in his arms.

“I know the first place I’m gonna check!” said Jasper, coming into the room. “I bet I find her!”

“What do we win if we do?” asked Marcus.

“Well, we’ll discuss that once we have her,” June said, intercepting the boys and shepherding them off so the men could be on their way.

“Okay, boys. You do as Aunt June says, okay? I’ll be back later.”

“Okay, Dad. Bye! Love ya!” called Jasper as he darted ahead of the little group.

“Can you stay with them for a little longer, June?” Dax called after her.

“Of course, Dax, don’t worry about them. We are safe here. You go find his mate.”

Dax and Rollo exchanged a look, but Rollo made no attempt to correct her. There was no need. Instead, he added quickly, “Got it. Thanks, June.”

Then Dax quickly added, “Oh, and also link up with Lora when you can, okay?”

“Lora? Why?” she asked.

“She’ll tell you. Okay, we gotta go.”

Okay, boys, good luck.” They exchanged another glance before the guys headed out the door.

“Come on. Let’s search the grounds,” Dax said.

He quickly turned and called back to June, ”Hey, how far to the end of the wards?

“Oh, miles, I think. In most directions. Except round back. It’s probably only a quarter mile or so to Route five…see, this was once a farmhouse too…”

“Well, that doesn’t sound particularly safe,” Rollo said.

“Why not?” asked June. “It could be twenty miles or twenty feet, no one is getting in here. Not with our spells, I’ll tell you that,” she said proudly.

“What about getting out?” Dax said.

“The spells were always only meant to keep people out. No one said anything about keeping anyone in!”

Rollo and Dax headed out the door.

They had heard enough.

CHAPTER23

“Oh my God! You’re lucky you’re alive, Winny!” Julie said, after Winona finished giving her the rundown on what had transpired over the last few days. “I mean, holy cow!” she continued.

“You must think I am a total idiot,” she said dejectedly.

“I’m just glad you’re okay. God. So, that was him that texted me the other day? Creepy!” Julie said as she pulled her car into her apartment complex.

“Well, I mean, he was protecting his family. He had no choice…”

“Winny, listen to yourself, okay? Stop. He kidnapped you, plain and simple. Or best case, he took advantage of you, but I am leaning toward ‘kidnapped’ since he locked you in,” she added as they got out of the car and headed up.

“But he was so sweet. I mean, you can’t imagine, I don’t know…”
