“You should take a break from this, sunshine,” Teo said, looking into my eyes.

“What?”

“This is a lot,” he said, gesturing toward the dining room table, which was still covered in stacks of paper and our laptops. “You’re in this world of gangs and danger, and when’s the last time you did something fun?”

I raised my eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I have a lot of work to do,” he said. “We all do. Jace is going to be looking at his computer for the foreseeable future and Grayson is still gathering as much information as he can. Believe it or not, I have a whole operation to run. You’re a very pretty distraction, but...”

My heart sank. “So what should I do?”

“We’re not going to let you go anywhere by yourself,” he said. “But we can have you take some time to unwind. We can all take a break from the chaos and just relax for a little while.”

I eyed him suspiciously. “What are you suggesting exactly?”

“Grayson’s job takes him all over the city,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “He can get you out of here and still fulfill his duties. Then when Jace is done, you can come back and figure things out. In the meantime, you need to start showing whoever is behind this that we’re not scared.”

“But wearescared,“ I said.

Teo smiled at me. “You don’t have anything to be scared of,” he said. “Never. For any reason. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” I whispered, feeling a shiver run down my spine at the intensity in his eyes. “I understand.”

Grayson stood up from his seat, interrupting the charged moment between Teo and me. “Alright, let’s get moving then. Sofia, let’s go.”

I stood up, looking down at the men, who were still working. “Where are we going exactly?” I asked as Grayson gestured for me to follow him to the door.

“We’re going to take a drive,” he said with a small smile. “Then we’ll figure it out. How does that sound?”

Sounded like heaven. I hadn’t realized how stir-crazy I had been.

Teo stood by the door, his hand on the doorknob. “Take care of her,” he said to Grayson before turning to me with a stern look. “And don’t forget that you belong to me.”

I blushed at Teo’s possessiveness. It was hard not to be affected by his commanding presence. But I couldn’t let myself get distracted. Not now, when we were in the middle of a crisis.

Grayson led me to a sleek black car parked outside, opening the door for me with a gentlemanly flourish. I slid into the passenger seat, taking in the luxurious leather and the scent of expensive cologne. Grayson got into the driver’s seat, adjusting the rearview mirror as he turned on the engine.

“Where are we going?” I asked again, my curiosity getting the better of me.

“Just for a drive,” he said, flashing me a lopsided grin. “I know a great spot where we can enjoy the view and clear our heads.”

We drove in silence for a while, the sound of the car engine and the wind outside being the only noises surrounding us. Grayson seemed lost in thought, his fingers tapping the steering wheel absentmindedly. I took the time to take in my surroundings. The city was so alive, even at this late hour. Bright lights illuminated every corner, and people were out and about, living their lives as if there was no danger lurking around. It was a strange feeling, being so close to danger while everyone else was blissfully unaware.

I knew we had to talk about what had happened the night before, and I knew that Teo was giving us a chance to do that, but it still felt weird.

Grayson turned down the radio and turned his face to look at me. “Sof,” he said. “Are you okay?”

I paused, staring out the window at the passing buildings. Was I okay? The truth was, I didn’t know. My life had been turned upside down in a matter of months, and I was still trying to process everything that was happening.

“I don’t know,” I said honestly, finally turning to meet his eyes. “I mean, this is all so insane. Everything is happening so fast.”

He considered that for a second. “You know,” he said. “I’ve been dreaming about fucking you since the very first moment I saw you. I think...”

I waited for him.

“It was so worth the wait,” he said after taking in a sharp breath. “You were so worth the wait. You’re so beautiful, Sofia.”

I felt my cheeks heat up at his words, a sense of desire pooling low in my stomach. I had always been attracted to Grayson’s quiet intelligence and quick wit, but hearing him talk like this sent a different kind of heat through my veins.
