We could only see shadows.

“Show yourself!” Victor barked, his gun drawn as we approached the figure crouched amongst the shadows. I had my own weapon at the ready, but something about the situation felt off. One of our rivals wouldn’t just break into our warehouse without thinking their body would be covered in bullet holes. The cops wouldn’t come here without a warning.

Even a bounty hunter would be smarter than this.

“Get a grip, both of you,” Sofia hissed, her eyes scanning the darkness. “Can’t you see she’s scared?”

The intruder turned to face us. It took me a second to recognize her without the filter, but she was unmistakable. The blonde hair clipped back, the dark-rimmed glasses that were half the size of her face.

This was Miranda Olivier.

“Who sent you?” Victor demanded, keeping his gun aimed at her heart. “Talk!”

“Fuck this,” Miranda said under her breath. She turned around and tried to make a break for it, sprinting toward the hole in the fence she had snuck in through. It took me a second to realize what she was doing.

“Victor, don’t shoot!” I said.

Sofia called out for me as soon as I took off after Miranda, my legs pumping furiously to close the distance between us. My mind raced with questions – who was manipulating her? What was their endgame? I would be able to look at her phone if I caught her. She had it in her hand as she tried to duck under the fence so she could get out.

There was no chance.

She might’ve been fast, but I was a lot faster.

Before she could reach the fence, I caught up with her. I tackled her to the ground and pinned her arms behind her back. She coughed as her face hit the concrete, her phone clattering somewhere.

She was squirming as I pressed her wrists together. “Fucking stop,” I said.

Victor joined us in a few seconds. He leaned down, his gun still trained on her. He secured her wrists with zip ties as I held her in one place.

Sofia stood near us, her eyes wide and her head tilted as she watched us.

“Nice try,” I growled, my heart still pounding from the sudden intrusion. “Now start talking.”

“Give me her phone,” Sofia ordered, holding out a hand. I grabbed the device from the floor, watching as Sofia began scrolling through the contents.

“Don’t change anything, Sof,” I said. “I want to look into it myself.”

“Don’t worry,” she replied. “I just stopped the livestream.”

“Give me back my–”

“Hey, be quiet,” Victor said, waving his gun at her as he leaned on one knee. “She’s the only reason there isn’t a bullet in your head right now, so be nice to her.”

“Looks like she’s been communicating with Sara,” Sofia said, her brow furrowed in concentration. “As we suspected, she’s someone who knows a lot about us.”

“Damn it,” Victor muttered, his voice filled with concern. “We need to find out who’s pulling her strings.”

“Agreed,” I said, feeling a surge of determination. “We’re not going to let them get away with this.”

Sofia sighed. “Who is this Sara person, Miranda? You must have looked into her,” she said. “Look, if you tell us now I’ll make sure the guys go easy on you.”

Miranda shook her head, her eyes darting between the three of us as if weighing her options.

As we escorted Miranda back into the warehouse, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease settling over me. Whoever was manipulating her had managed to breach our defenses.

And that meant none of us were safe.

Victor carried Miranda to the warehouse as if she didn’t weigh anything. She was slung over his shoulders like a sack of potatoes and it was clear she had given up the fight, at least for now.
