Good. She knew she was outmatched.

Sofia walked with me, her hand on my shoulder. “You’re going to want to look into this, I know,” she said. “But there’s a lot of information on this phone just at first glance and I’m really surprised she isn’t doing a better job at keeping it locked down.”

“Like what?” I asked.

“Like notes on us,” she replied. “Speculation about the Blades. That kind of thing. A conspiracy theory that says I’m the Strangler?”

I laughed. “That’s an interesting theory.”

Sof smiled back at me. “I thought so too.”

There wasn’t much time to think about it, because Victor was bringing her into the warehouse and setting her down on the sofa. Her gaze darted around at all the bits of information that were still out.

“We can’t kill her,” I said when I saw the look in Victor’s eyes. “It’s different when it’s just gangsters or people coming after us for bounties, but this woman is a public figure and the cops are already chomping at the bit to get us for any reason. We can’t give them a reason to come after us.”

Victor glared at her, the gun still in his hand. “She’s one of the reasons we’re in this mess.”

“I know,” I said. “But she’s not the only reason we’re in this mess.”

“Guys, come here,” Sof said. We walked over to another side of the room, where we could still see her but she wouldn’t be able to see us.

“Listen,” Sofia began, her voice steady and determined even when she spoke in a whisper. “We need to keep Miranda close. If we let her go or lock her up, we lose any chance of figuring out who’s behind this.”

“Are you insane?” Victor snapped, his eyes wide with disbelief. “She tried to break in! She’s sent killers after us, afteryou. We can’t trust her.”

“Victor, think about it,” Sofia insisted, her eyes locked onto his. “Whoever is manipulating her knows too much about us. If we can get her to talk, we can find out how they’re getting their information and put an end to this threat.”

I could see the logic in Sofia’s words, but the idea of allowing a potential enemy to remain in our midst was unnerving. My gut twisted with doubt, but my loyalty to Sofia won out.

She was so smart.

I normally would have asked Grayson what he thought about this, but in this case, I thought it made sense to defer to Sofia as much as I possibly could.

“It’s risky, but she might be right,” I said reluctantly, meeting Victor’s gaze.

“Fine,” Victor huffed. He didn’t seem particularly happy about this. “But Teo has to approve this plan. If he doesn’t agree, we need to come up with another plan for her.”

“We’ll release and kill her,” I said. “So it can’t be traced back to us.”

Sofia paled. “Let’s not let it get to that,” she said. “I’ll convince him. We’ll make sure Teo sees this as the best course of action.”

As Sofia spoke, I couldn’t help but admire her determination. She was willing to put herself at risk to protect all of us, even though the odds seemed to be stacked against her. It reminded me why I had fallen so hard for her in the first place – her courage and resilience were unmatched.

And she was always fucking sexy when she had a plan.

“Alright,” I said, swallowing my apprehension. “But we need to keep Miranda under constant watch. One slip-up could cost us everything.”

“Understood,” Sofia agreed, her eyes filled with resolve. “Let’s go speak to Teo.”

I knew Teo wasn’t easily swayed, but if anyone could convince him, it was Sofia. My heart raced with anticipation and worry, and I couldn’t help but hope that we were making the right choice.

“We should do this in person,” Victor said.

“Agreed,” I replied.

Sofia was on the phone to Teo, pacing back and forth as she spoke to him quietly and out of earshot. If this had been one of us, we would be giving him a full status report. But it wasn’t one of us. This was his girlfriend and I had no idea what she would be telling him.

She hung up and sighed. “Okay,” she said. “He said we should go to his house.”
