“Are you excited for Halloween tomorrow?” I speared a piece of steak with my fork and brought it up to his lips. His lips parted and he bit into the steak, his eyes locked on mine as he chewed.

He reached over and grasped my wrist, kissing up my arm. “I am, little star. You’re going to look ravishing in your costume.”

A tingle ran up my spine and I squeezed my thighs together at the look in his eyes. “As will you. Did your brothers decide on a costume yet?”

We took turns feeding each other from our plates, the sexual tension in the room heightening with each bite. “Batman and Robin. Thora has agreed to be Wonder Woman.”

“That’s actually pretty adorable.”

“Don’t let them hear you say that.” He looked out the window, his expression changing. “There is one thing I should mention.” His eyes darkened, and I stopped mid-chew. “Piper Lawless was waiting outside my office when I was leaving.”

My fork fell to my plate, making a clinking sound. “Are you kidding?” I scoffed.

“Unfortunately not.” He wiped his mouth and leaned back in his seat. “She wanted to talk about Goodacre.”

“And what did you tell her?” I leaned forward and placed my elbows on the table. Every nerve in my body was on full alert. Did she have no soul? How could she possibly think it was OK to constantly harass people? I was all about supporting women in journalism, but I would be lying if I said the idea of slashing all her tires hadn’t crossed my mind.

“I told her I would have her arrested for trespassing if she didn’t vacate the premises.” He shrugged. “She’s a pest, nothing more. I’ll file a restraining order next week to hopefully curb her appetite for this ridiculous story she has in her mind about what happened.”

His back stiffened, and I immediately regretted the topic coming up. This was supposed to be a fun night without the bullshit.

“We don’t need to ruin our night by talking about any of that.” I clucked my tongue and walked over to the fridge, pulling out the crème brûlée I had managed not to fuck up earlier in the day. Cian raised his eyebrows and clapped as I placed two bowls in front of him.

“You are full of surprises,” he murmured.

“Isn’t that what you love most about me?” I grinned and sat down in his lap, my skin tingling where we touched.

His hands roamed up my thighs and under my dress. “There are so many things I love about you.” He scooped up some custard and brought it to my lips. My tongue darted out, tasting the silky-soft cream, and he growled in appreciation, my nipples hardening at the sound.

“Like what?” My voice was breathless as he teased up the seam of my panties with his thumb.

“I love your fierce heart.” He leaned closer and kissed me just above my breasts. “And your desire to always do the right thing.” I moaned as his fingers slid under my panties, finding me wet for him. He inhaled deeply, his other hand digging into my flesh. “I love how you keep me sane.”

I filled up the spoon with custard, my fingers shaking with anticipation as he licked it off, at the same time as he slid his finger deep inside of me. My breaths came out in little pants as he stroked, teasing me. “I love that I get to spend the rest of my life with you.” He removed his hand and tossed the spoon on the table, the air thick with desire. I gasped as he stood and picked me up effortlessly, my legs wrapping around him. “And I love how you take this dick like a good girl.”

“Damn right,” I groaned as he pushed me against the wall, licking up the crook of my neck. “Now let’s go reenact the night we first met, Mr. Blackwood.”

He growled against my lips and lifted me up higher. His hands gripped my ass as he took us down the hall to our master bedroom.

After several blissful and mind-blowing orgasms, we lay in bed, our bodies tangled together as we tried to catch our breath. Only when our breathing evened out did I attempt to speak. We joked about the Halloween party tomorrow night and how seriously Eros and Orin took it. Apparently, they wore themed costumes every year. Eros was still upset that Orin had gotten to be Wolverine two years ago and was adamant that he got to be Batman this year because Batman was “way cooler than Robin,” in his words. For a bunch of grown men, they sure acted like they were still teenagers. But I loved it. I’d never had that kind of bond with my sister Grace, but that didn’t matter anymore.

“OK, pineapple on pizza, yay or nay?” Cian asked.

“Yay, of course.”

“Nay for me.” He chuckled as I smacked his chest.

“What’s not to love? Salty, gooey cheese plus sweet, yummy pineapple. It’s the perfect combination.”

“Hmm, I think your logic is off.”

“Don’t make me divorce you before we’re even married.”

He reached down and slapped my ass, and I giggled. “Not in a million years, little star.”

“OK, would you rather be an astronaut stranded on Mars, or a marine biologist stuck underwater in a submarine?”

“Astronaut, one hundred percent. When I was a young boy, I used to dream about going to outer space.” His body stiffened, and I tried to glance up at him, but he wouldn’t let me move. “My mother even decorated my room with glow-in-the-dark stars and would lie with me at night, reading me the story of Alfie the Astronaut. But my father didn’t like that. Ripped them off all the walls, leaving nothing but stripped paint and ripped wallpaper behind.” His voice hardened, and I squeezed him as tight as I could. Guilt coursed through me as I internally kicked myself. Why did I have to ask that question?
