BEST,

GOLDEN GATE APARTMENTS

.

Fucking fantastic.

I make my way down to Callan’s car. I send Dakota another text on my way down.

We really need to talk...

The car ride is silent. I don’t even know where we’re going, I just know Callan has been driving for a while and we’re at least thirty minutes outside of the small city by now. The words from the eviction notice play on a loop in my mind. I hold the folded piece of paper in my hand but can’t bring myself to open it up again. My anxiety builds as time passes, and Dakota still hasn’t responded.

“Everything okay?” Callan breaks the silence.

“Yup. All good.” I crumple up the paper and shove it in my purse.

“What is that?” he asks, keeping his hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road.

“An eviction notice,” I admit, feeling the slight ping of embarrassment from my confession.

“Wait, what?” He sounds genuinely shocked.

“It’s nothing, Callan.”

It’s none of his business, and for him to sound shocked by the fact that people have real lives and real problems, makes my blood boil even more. How can I be so attracted and caring towards a person who makes me want to rip their head off?

He pulls over into a parking lot of a shopping center. As soon as the car stops, I can feel him eyeing me. I don’t need his pity and I don’t need to feel embarrassed either.

“Sterling. What’s going on?” He unbuckles his seat belt and leans over, placing his hand on my shoulder. His touch is comforting, but it doesn’t make me forget the words we shared last night.

“I’d rather not talk to you about it.” I swipe the sudden tears from my cheeks and take off my safety belt to get out of the car. “I’d really rather be alone right now. This was a bad idea.” I step out and close the door behind me, leaning against the car. Callan immediately joins me outside of the car.

“It’s okay to let someone in.” Callan walks around to meet me where I stand with my arms crossed.

“Says the man who just banished me from his home after I so willingly allowed myself to be vulnerable in front of him. Way to make a girl feel special.” I seethe, but in a more sarcastic tone than an angry one.

“Please talk to me,” he whispers.

I fight back the water pooling in my eyes as I look up at him. His dark chocolate-colored hair falls in a perfect mess of curls, like he didn’t take the time to gel it back today the way he normally does.

We both stand in silence for a few moments before he finally takes a breath and speaks.

“Sterling,” he says, stepping even closer to me now.

“You’re like, really fucking stupid you know that?” I begin, feeling all of the emotions from the last two days. The confusing mess of poetic lines he’s been spitting at me mixed with his carnal flirtations and gentlemanly gestures.

“I know. I know. I just-”

“You just, what, Callan? You like picking people up and then breaking them apart?” I don’t want him to see that he’s affected me too much, but unfortunately for me, I have a mouth with a mind of its own whenever he’s concerned.

“You said you were going to take the silver spoon out of my mouth.” Callan’s tone is lower and much calmer than it was yesterday. Yesterday, he seemed possessive and eager to show off his manpower. He shoves his hands in his front pockets.
