“Wait,dates, plural?”

“Yeah. She told me she was seeing these guys a while ago. Five guys. I remember thinking about the burgers. They’re better than people.”

The doctor…oh what did Cove say his name was?Reef will make us all some breakfast first anyway.

Reef. His name’s reef. It suits him actually.Reefbites back a smile at that but nods encouragingly for me to go on.

“What were they like?”

“Honestly? I don’t really remember.” I close my eyes and try to recall, but their faces are hazy and shadowed. Dark. Similar. Quintuplets maybe?

“Do you remember their names?”

I shake my head. Trying to concentrate on the details of last night causes a blinding pain to stab me right behind the eyes. I gasp.

“Boss.” Anxiety laces Cove’s tone. “Take it easy, Mai-Tai. It’s okay. Don’t force yourself to remember.”

He squeezes my hand again, and I relax a little as the pain recedes.

“Tell us anything you can remember. Anything at all,” Reef prompts gently.

“The food was horrible,” I say. “Whatever I had for a starter made me feel so sick. The room started to waver and so I excused myself.”

“Was everyone at the table at that point?”

I shake my head. “No. One of the guys was gone, and so was Summer.”

“Did you see them on your way to the bathroom?”

“Only Summer. I passed her in the hallway.”

“Did you speak?”

“She asked me what I thought of them and I lied.”

“What did you say?”

“I said yeah, they seemed nice. I gave her my approval and she seemed…relieved?”

“But you didn’t mean it?”

“No. They made me really uncomfortable. They asked me too many questions about myself and they stared. A lot.” I shiver as I recall snippets of the night. Not specifics, just the feelings they evoked in me.

It’s nothing like being around these guys. Sure, the professor is an absolute dickhead at the best of times, but the others are nice, and I find myself more relaxed in their presence than I would have thought possible.

“What happened when you entered the bathroom? Did you see the body?”

I shake my head again. “No. There was no one else in there. I went into the cubicle and sat down. The window was open so I thought the fresh air might help, but I was so dizzy. I don’t know how long I was in there.”

“You blacked out?”

“Maybe. I didn’t hear anyone come in, but when I left the cubicle that was when I saw…” I trail off to a whisper. “There was so much blood.”

“What did you do next?”

“I checked to see if she was breathing, but her chest wasn’t moving. Her eyes…they were staring right at me and they were like this golden colour. I remember thinking how beautiful they were until I realised the shape was all wrong.”

“How so?”
