“They were more…feline, I guess”

“Probably contact lenses,” the professor says dismissively.

I frown. “They were like a cat’s eyes, but they didn’t seem like contact lenses.” Suddenly I remember something else. “She had a tail too!”

“Umm, what?” Cove laughs tersely, but it sounds fake. Forced. Off.

“A tail. A bushy one. Like a cat.”

“Hmm.”

“I’ve seen those,” Bhodi chimes in. “You can get all sorts of butt plug tails.”

“What?” I shake my head. “No. It wasn’t…” Was it?

Come on Malia! Do you really think that girl had cat eyes and a freaking tail? Tell the doctor to book your bed on the psyche ward!

You saw what you saw. You’renotcrazy. They’re lying to you.

Why would they lie?

Why wouldn’t they? Do you really know them?

I shake my head, overwhelmed and so confused. I don’t know what to think. Who to believe.

“What did you do then?”

“It scared me. Her eyes. I scrambled backwards and I slipped in the blood and—” I swallow hard “—entrails. That’s when I knew I couldn’t save her. Because her guts were all over the floor.”

“So you rang me?”

I nod at Cove. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to drag you into…whatever this is. I panicked.”

“Why not call out for help, or go back into the restaurant? Or even call Summer?”

“I-I don’t know. I knew it would look bad. I was covered in blood and was freaking out. And Summer had forgotten her phone.” I suddenly remember. “She was mad when we arrived and the guys weren’t there yet, but she couldn’t call them. Cove just seemed…safe, I guess.”

“You did the right thing,” the professor surprises me by saying.

“Really?” I ask. He nods, the harsh lines of his face softening a little.

“She wasn’t okay was she?”

“No. I won’t lie to you, we couldn’t save her.”

“Am I going to get in trouble? The police will want to speak to me, won’t they?”

The guys all exchange glances before the prof answers, “No. It’s taken care of.”

I don’t understand what that means, but the guarded expression on his face prevents me from asking for further clarification.

“What happens now? I should probably let Summer know I’m okay. But I don’t have my phone.”

“I’ve got it. Cove found it on the floor in the bathroom,” Reef tells me, reaching out to place it on the table between us. I go to reach for it but the prof stops me.

“It’s not a good idea to tell her where you are.”

“Why?”
