Pain flared across my knuckles as the lizard alien’s head snapped back. Opaque white membranes slid closed across his eyes, and he dropped to the ground with a satisfying thud.

I scooped up my blaster and stunned him, just in case. Then I shot the other guard for good measure.

The Tula knew we were here. Whoever had seen us right before we started to run must have alerted the compound. We had to make what time we could.

We also had to retrieve the supplies I’d stashed—we wouldn’t make it far without the stealth material to hide us from overhead flights.

I turned to face my mate.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

I nodded and gestured for her to climb onto my back.

Her eyes narrowed. “I can run. I’m not as fast as you were before, but you’re hurt now.”

I ground my teeth as I took a breath, and pain flared along my ribs. She might have been right, but I hated not being able to carry her from danger.

And since the Tula knew we were here, stealth would benefit us more that speed at this point. We couldn’t afford to run—literally—into another of their patrols.

I pulled out my comp and typed,“We’ll both walk. We need to move quietly and avoid the guards.”

She nodded, then stepped close to whisper, “I’m Sofie.”

“Zo-Fee,” I said. Such a lovely name.

“And you?”

“Raxnor.”

She smiled, and her pretty face became so beautiful my tail rose behind me with an eager buzz.

“Well, Raxnor, it’s nice to meet you.” Then she lost her smile as she glanced over at the downed Tula. “Are they… dead?”

“No,”I typed.“Simply unconscious.”

“Hmm.” Her expression cleared. She leaned over and picked up one of their dropped blasters. “So this doesn’t kill?”

“It can.”I pointed to the power controls.“But it’s currently set to stun.”

Zo-Fee trotted over to the other blaster and picked it up as well, spinning to face me with one in each hand. “I’m ready to go.”

“Do you know how to shoot?”

“Not really.” She gave a little shrug, then smiled. “But the lizards don’t know that.”

A startled huff of amusement escaped me, loving her ingenuity.

“Might as well practice a little.” She shot the first guard who’d found us. “Take that, asshole!”

I shot her a questioning look, and she shrugged. “Just something I needed to get out of my system.”

I pulled up the map on my comp, found where I’d left the supplies, and started off with Zo-Fee following behind.

If we ran into anymore trouble, it would have to get through me to reach her.

And I’d die before I let that happen.
