Whatever they wanted from me, they hadn’t found it yet.

These big, blue, horned fuckers had kept me locked in this building for days. They weren’t cruel about it. I had food, water, and clothes. They’d even given me a bed.

But they weren’t kind either.

My room was small, windowless. When they weren’t treating me like a lab rat, they ignored me, leaving me nothing to do but sit and stew. To them, I was a thing, not a person.

Keeping me from my ship and the women under my care was the worst psychological torture imaginable. They’d make a mistake eventually. I just had to keep waiting and looking for my chance.

“I’m Captain Vivian Lee.” I glared into the doctor’s cold purple eyes. “And Iwillrescue my crew.”

Two days later, the guard gave me a weird shake to drink instead of breakfast. The sweet fruity taste couldn’t hide the underlying chalky metallic tang.

“Is your food the same this morning?” I said out loud. Max always seemed to hear me, even though I didn’t think it was with his ears.

“Yes,”he said, and a feeling of boredom flowed through my mind.“Same dead thing not moving.”

Well, that went morbid quickly. But who was I to judge how aliens did things? Humans ate meat—or at least the wealthy ones did.

I gagged down another mouthful of the thick drink. It was that or have the guard try to force-feed me, something Ineverwanted to repeat. The metallic taste rolled over my tongue.

“Something’s going to be different about today. I can feel it,” I said. “Try not to speak to me for a while. I’m going to try to get us out, and I can’t afford to be distracted at the wrong moment.”

“Okay!”A wash of bright joy came to me.

I swallowed the last of the horror smoothie as my door opened, and I darted out into the hallway. The guard’s huge hand clamped onto my arm, jerking me to a halt. His sneer showed fangs as he gestured impatiently for the can.

My hand moved slowly as I raised it. Could I bash him in the head? But the can weighed almost nothing, made out of some thin and light metal like aluminum.

He jerked it from my grasp, frowning down into it to make sure I’d drunk it all. With a grunt, he yanked me down the hall, his grip tight enough to bruise.

I made no effort to resist, saving my strength for a better chance.

As soon as the blue alien guard shoved me into the bright-white examination room, I ran over to the cabinets, yanking on every locked handle. It hadn’t worked on any of the previous days, but damned if I’d give up.

One gave under my hand! Yes!

I wrenched open the drawer, fighting down a yell of triumph. Scalpels! So many glorious scalpels, all shiny silver and sharp, sharp blades.

Then icy shivers skittered down my spine. Is this unlocked today because they finally plan to cut me up?

No. I squared my shoulders. I might not be seven-foot tall and topped with horns, but I refused to go down without a fight. My crew was out there somewhere, and those women counted on me.

The stretchy blue material of the clothes they’d given me didn’t have any pockets, but it didn’t matter. I’d surprise the next alien through the door.

A scalpel in each hand, I slid the drawer shut with my hip and hurried back over to the door. Plastering myself to the wall, I waited, barely daring to breathe.

Who’d come through the door next? The guard whose grip left bruises on my arms or the doctor who looked like she wanted to slice me open to see how I worked?

I wasn’t sure which of them I wanted to stab more. My knuckles whitened as my fingers clenched the scalpel hilts. Either would do.

The door swung open, and I launched forward, jabbing one scalpel toward the alien’s chest.

An iron bar of a forearm blocked my blow.

But being short was a blessing. I dipped and plunged the other scalpel into the meaty part of a thigh.

“Frek!”
