I didn’t need to know the language to recognize swearing. A fierce grin stretched my cheeks as I danced backward, waving the blade I still held. “Think you’re going to cut into me? Think again!”

A string of syllables in a deep, smooth voice made my eyes widen.

It wasn’t the guard or the doctor. A new blue alien glared at me. Tall like the others, he was even more handsome, with a strong jaw and blazing purple eyes. Unlike all of the others, he actuallylookedat me.

That look sent shivers through my body.

Then I squared my shoulders. “How dare you look at me, all affronted?I’mthe one you people have kept like a lab rat for the past week, poked and prodded and made to pee in cups.”

He tore the knife from his thigh without a flinch and flung it across the room. It bounced off a cabinet with a clang, leaving behind a splotch of red.

Ignoring his wound, he pulled out one of the alien scanners and pointed its silver metal wand at me.

I made myself keep from flinching.

When it beeped, he said, “You should be able to understand me now.”

“What? How?” I sputtered, angry all over again. These assholes had been able to talk to me this whole time, and they’d just… refused! “Why?”

“We don’t have time for this.” He reached out to grab my biceps in the same place the guard had bruised. Did my arm have some kind of “manhandle here” sign on it that only aliens could see?

I skittered backward, waving the scalpel, which he ignored in a way I foundreallyirritating. I was a trained fighter, dammit!

“I’m here to rescue you.”

“Rescue, ha!” They hadn’t gotten anything out of me by holding me prisoner, so now they were going to “free” me to see if I’d confide in my “rescuer”? Come to think of it, I’d play that game. Getting out of this institutional facility might give me a chance to escape.

His phone beeped, his mouth pressing into a thin line. “We need to go. Put away that toy and pretend I’m your guard.”

“Toy?” Did he have any idea of how hard it had been to get a hold of this scalpel? I’d been trying all damned week!

He sucked in a deep breath, and his tail rose above his shoulder, the purple tip vibrating wildly.

Shit!I hadn’t seen one of them do that before. Is that something they do when they’re really angry?

The tail darted around his side, flying toward me, and I slashed at it with the tiny, one-inch blade. He jerked his tail back before I ever made contact. Maybe he had a point about the scalpel being a toy.

“I won’t hurt you. You’re my fated—”

An alarm rang out.

“That’s it. I don’t have time to humor you any longer.” His expression hardened until his jaw looked so square, you could use it to draw right angles.

I opened my mouth to protest that he wasn’thumoringanyone.

He snatched the scalpel away so quickly his hand blurred. Then he scooped me up and tossed me over his shoulder. One steely arm clamped over my butt, locking me in place.

I let out an undignified yelp as he spun around and loped down the corridor.

“Let go of me!” I bounced a fist off his rock-hard muscles.

It didn’t faze him one bit. If anything, he ran faster.

The vibrating end of his tail coiled around my back. Only it didn’t feel like anger at all.

His tail held me like I was precious.
