Lyle watched her closely, as if waiting for a change in her expression. But xe seemed to not find anything suspicious, and xe smiled back, relieved. “Then I’d like that, too.”

“May I?” She asked, gesturing towards xyr chest.

“Sure.”

She laid down again, putting her head on xyr chest, and xe started playing with her hair.

“I think I understand how you feel,” Jillian said. “This is my house, but I haven’t lived here in years. I came back recently because the stress of working with humans became too much. Since I was the only witch in town, they loaded me with orders, continuously asking me for my services without caring about me. I’ve lived in that city for years, yet no one even remembers my name.”

“They say demons are cruel, but humans will always be the worst species in my opinion,” Lyle replied.

“Yeah…” Jillian reached out to take a strand of xyr long black hair to mindlessly play with as well. “I know what it’s like to feel immersed in your work, like you don’t have an identity. I’m sorry for acting like that with you, too.”

“There is no need for you to apologize,” xe said, voice soft. “But thank you.”

She liked feeling the rhythm of xyr chest moving under her, and the warmth of their bodies together. She wondered if demons were naturally warm or if it was something xe changed about xemself knowing witches, just like humans, were warm-blooded. She wanted to ask but worried it would sound weird, so she decided to keep her questions for another time.

“I have a question for you,” xe eventually announced.

She tilted her head up. “Go on.”

“How is a gorgeous woman like you single?” Lyle asked, xyr tone genuine. “I’ve been thinking it for a while, and I can’t understand why you would need to call me in the first place, because I doubt you’d have trouble finding a partner. And I don’t mean it in a rude way, but aren’t people your age usually settling down?”

“Usually, yes.” Jillian shrugged. “It’s not like I haven’t thought of doing that myself, it’s just that I never felt the need to. I like my life the way it is, and I never felt like I needed one more person in the mix to be satisfied with it, you know?”

She had been in love before, had been in relationships. She had enjoyed her time with them and never regretted any of it, but there was something about being a single, independent woman that gave her a satisfaction no one else, or nothing else, ever did. If she ever fell in love again she wouldn’t be opposed to dating, but it was not something she was actively seeking.

Xyr lips tugged up a little. “Interesting.”

She eyed xem with fake suspicion. “What’s interesting?”

Lyle took her black strand of hair in xyr taloned fingers, twirling it around one of them. “You just seem like the romantic type.”

“I can be romantic while also not feeling the need to seek romance for myself,” she replied. “Dating is nice, sure, but so is being single.”

Xe let out a breath that sounded like a soft scoff, a grin on xyr lips. “Fair enough.”

She couldn’t hold back her own smile at xyr adorable reaction. Jillian found moments like this—where they kept each other company—were intimate and comforting. She wanted them to last forever.

“Lyle?” she called hesitantly.

“Yes?”

“I feel rested now, and I wouldn’t mind going again if you want to,” she stated slowly. “But I also kind of like cuddling like this. Would it be okay if we stayed like this for the rest of the night?”

Lyle was silent for a while, and Jillian’s worry grew by the second. Had she overstepped? Maybe cuddling was a little too much for xem, too vulnerable.

“Okay,” xe eventually said. “We can cuddle.”

Xe brought an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer. Jillian tried to hide her relieved smile as she settled against xem.

Jillian knew there was a high chance Lyle would not be in her bed when she woke up in the morning, yet a small part of her was still disappointed, especially after what they had talked about the night before.

She couldn’t help feeling worried. She liked xyr company more than she would ever admit, but she couldn’t get attached. They had agreed to be friends, but xe was not going to stay forever, and xe surely would never be attached to her in the same way.
