It sounded like Chris was going to boil in dread for the time being. “Just keep this between us, okay?”

“Of course! Don’t insult me.” Mickey moved to sit and opened the drawer next to the bed. “Oh my, so many dildos. Are they even clean?”

Chris’s heart had been gradually settling down during the conversation, but it was back picking up speed. “Leave that alone.”

“You don’t know much about customer service, do you? Ipaidfor a service.”

“You said you wouldn’t—”

“Fuck you, and I meant it.” He picked up a black dildo. Not the largest one, but large enough. “A dildo is a completely different thing; an expert like you should know that.” He pulled out the small bottle of lube and started rubbing some on the dildo.

“Mickey, come on.”

“Should I return my sock into your mouth? I also paid for the right to hit you, remember? I wasn’t going to, but you’re making me reconsider.”

Chris decided to try another tactic, hoping he knew Mickey well enough. “Go on,” he said, “shove it in me.”

Mickey made a face. “You don’t need to act so eager.”

Chris bent his legs and spread them. “But I am eager. And what are you doing with that small thing? Take a bigger one.”

Mickey rolled his eyes. “I really should gag you.”

“Won’t make me love it any less. Come on, stick it in me already.” Chris spread his legs farther. “What’s the hold-up?”

With a grunt, Mickey shoved the dildo back into the drawer and started putting his socks back on. “You really are a piece of work, Roberts. Can’t let a friend have a bit of fun. Do you have any idea how hard I work?”

“I work harder.”

Mickey waved his hand dismissively. “I’m sure that having strangers fuck you for money during work hours can be cumbersome.” He finished with his shoes and got up. “Well, it’s been a pleasure, and definitely eye-opening. We will speak when I decide it’s time.”

“Will you tell anyone about this?” He needed to know for sure.

Mickey snickered and walked toward the door. “Like I’m going to give away my cards so easily. What’s the fun in that?”

“What aren’t you telling me?” Jay asked. They were sitting at the bar in a place close to the apartment.

Chris sighed, exhausted by the conversation, which was more like an interrogation. “I told you what you need to know.”

“Not good enough.”

Chris shrugged and took a sip of his wine. He had been drinking too much, but he couldn’t stomach going back home after what had happened with Mickey. Although he preferred to drink alone, Jay had insisted on knowing why the new client had left so soon. Chris told him what he could, which wasn’t much since he himself was in the dark.

How could he protect himself from the unknown?

“What went down between Mickey and Anthony?” Jay asked again.

That was the one thing Chris shouldn’t have mentioned, but the wine had made his tongue slippery. “I told you—”

“Tell me again.” Jay leaned closer. “This time without the bullshit.”

They might have been sitting in a public place, but Jay was still dangerous. Chris rubbed his face and signaled the waitress to bring him another drink. “I told you about the club Mickey’s a part of.”

“Yeah…”

“He made me go there with Anthony.”
