Duncan jumped out and slammed the van door open. We raced to the jet and got in. Her slowing heartbeat echoed in my ears. I glanced over at all the gray faces sitting around me. Everyone wore lines of exhaustion and fatigue after our long run.

"What's the ETA?" I asked Duncan.

"Two hours, and that's pushing it to the limit," he replied grimly.

I fought off the waves of hopelessness. She would live goddammit.

"She's going to make it, she's going to make it," I chanted to myself, hopefully projecting that into her mind and spirit even if unconscious.

I held her for the duration of the flight, allowing no one else to help me. My hands felt like wooden stumps on the ends of my arms, completely useless. At least they stopped bleeding freely, and the pain numbed out a while ago.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we landed. I shot up from my seat, using the last bit of adrenaline left that I had.

Lucian slammed the emergency door open, rolled out the stairs, and leaped out of my way. I pounded down the stairs, careful to keep my balance and not shift Adrianna any more than necessary.

Finally, the goddamn healers!Thank fucking god!

I've never been happier to see the black-robed, elderly healers of the Bloodmoon pack in all my life. They were there waiting with a gurney already set up and a nearby tent erected.

They had clearly been warned ahead of time of the gravity of the situation. Their alpha wolves' new mate hovered between life and death. The fate of the future of their pack lay in their hands. They took her from my arms, and I was left suddenly empty and bereft like a boat without a sail.

An elderly healer approached me tentatively.

"Alpha Kayden, allow me to see to your hands," she rasped out.

"No! Save Adrianna with the rest of them."

She harrumphed, not used to being spoken sharply towards at her advanced age. But she pivoted on her heel, her agility defying her age, and followed her fellow healers to the now bustling tent.

We had completed our purpose. We rescued our mate and slain her enemies. She was brought to the healers. Now, we were helpless in the face of destiny. Strength, speed, and endurance had no place now. I exchanged solemn glances with Duncan, Lucien, and Killian.

What the hell could we do now?

Chapter 12

Adrianna

Iwaslostbetweenworlds.

I drifted through states of consciousness and unconsciousness, through blinding pain and numbing bliss. I saw flashes of the human man evilly grinning, whose face turned into Kayden's compassion-filled gaze. The van, the horrid van, I was back in it.

Images blurred together in a confusing haze.

No!I had to escape. I fought weakly but drifted off again into the unknown. The sensation of weightlessness. Being surrounded by warm male presences. Multiple males lending strength, love, and peace.

Then, I faded again into the blackness.

I woke up to the sound of birds chirping and felt sunlight warming my face. I was too afraid to open my eyes, terrified of what I was going to see next. I bravely peeked one eye open and gasped in shock.

I was in a beautiful, golden room, lying in a soft, fluffy cloud of bedding. I was in the middle of a giant, majestic bed in the center of the most luxurious room I had ever seen.

Did I die and make it to heaven?

The golden, intricate door eased open, and Killian slowly walked in, holding a washcloth in his hand. My heart jumped at the sight. Oh god, how I had missed him! A warm, familiar face.

He didn't notice I was awake. His face was crestfallen as he carefully made his way to the bed.

"Killian," I rasped out, my throat feeling sore and scratchy.
