Bryson doesn’t even look at me. I don’t know if he ignores me on purpose, but it doesn’t matter. His lips are curved up, and the only way that I can describe him in this moment is pure evil.

Then there’s Shelby. She’s practically buzzing. She’s bouncing on her toes, and there is a sparkle in her eyes that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. She’s excited, thrilled even.

None of this is going to end well for anyone, and when my gaze shifts to Andrew, I can tell he feels the same way I do. He is the only one who is looking at me, and I can read the pain in his gaze.

I want to comfort him, but I know I can’t move, so I try to convey whatever courage I can toward him. Hopefully, it will work.

ChapterThirty-Three

COLEMAN

Letting out a laugh,I listen as it echoes around the room. This whole house is empty, but it’s fucking perfect.

Everything about it.

Initially, I wasn’t sure if I would like something my father picked out for me, but he knows me. I should have realized he wouldn’t have chosen something I hated, but he’s still not me and still made the decision without me, so driving over here was a bit nerve-racking.

“It’s absolutely perfect,” Wells murmurs. “Hey,” he calls out.

I turn my head and look over at him. We’ve both had a little too much to drink, so I don’t even bat an eye at his lopsided grin because, no doubt, I’m wearing one as well.

“Do you think I’ll get one, too, maybe on this block?” he asks.

“A house?”

He hums. “I get married and get my own promotion.”

He’s right. He will get initiated as well. My position was originally going to be the only one, but with Uncle Dean being gone, we do need one more person for voting purposes, which probably means that Hendrick is going to be promoted as well, maybe even a couple of the cousins.

“I bet you will,” I say. “I shouldn’t want you to be my neighbor, but I think it would work out well for us.”

“It really would.”

We don’t say anything else, then Hendrick walks into the room, coming from somewhere else in the house, and his eyes find mine. I can see the panic in his gaze. My entire body freezes, sobering immediately. I take a step toward him and start to ask him what the fuck is going on, but he speaks first.

“Parker, Mom, all of Claire’s siblings, and David just showed up at your place.”

“What the fuck?” I grind out.

“Let’s fucking go, right goddamn now,” Wells barks.

Without a second thought, another word, without even another breath, we all rush out the door and head straight for the car. I start the engine the moment my ass hits the seat, and before Hendrick even closes the door, I have the car inReverseand the tires are screeching as I back out of the driveway.

It doesn’t take me long to get through the busy Dallas traffic and into my parking garage. I know I break about a hundred laws in my rush to get home, but I don’t give a fuck. Once I’m parked in my spot, I kill the engine, but I don’t open the door and rush into the condo.

Instead, I turn toward my brothers. We have to have some kind of plan in place. We can’t just walk in there. Gun’s hot and shooting. Not only would that bring in a hell of a lot of drama we don’t need, but it would also put the women in danger.

“I didn’t see Allison,” Hendrick whispers.

“What’s happening right now?” Wells asks, ignoring Hendrick’s obvious worry about the girl he won’t admit he’s completely fallen in love with.

Hendrick clears his throat before he speaks. I can hear the roughness there, and I know he’s upset. He is completely and totally in love with this girl, and he has no fucking idea where she is. And now that we might know who took her, she still hasn’t shown up, and she should be with them—logically speaking.

Except there is nothing logical about members of the family taking the wives and fiancées of other members.

“The women are sitting in the living room. Junior and David are talking to one another, standing behind the couch, and they seem to be in a serious and heated conversation, but the women don’t look like they’re saying a fucking word.”

Good.
