We all take our turns dancing with her, patrolling the area. Our dance is at this farm that they decked out to look all haunted. The barn is painted black with orange lights hanging from the ceiling. A corn maze is off in the distance, and there is even a haunted hayride through the forest. People surround us all in costume. Girls dressed as Playboy bunnies, sexy police officers and nurses. Guys in horror movie costumes, doctors, vampires, and zombies. Not one person looks out of place here, but then again, with everyone in a mask or pretending to be a different character, how are we to know who this person is?

Throughout the night, we keep our guards up, but nothing out of the normal happens, so we chose to just enjoy our night and assume that it was just another scare tactic. Abigail is on the dancefloor with Ryan, and I decide he has hogged enough of her time, so I tap him on the shoulder. “Mind if I step in?”

“Of course, brother.” Ryan steps away and walks over to Parker, who has been on edge all night. He has barely spent any time with Abby. He has just been walking around, keeping tabs on everyone here and keeping watch. The man needs to loosen up.

“Are you enjoying yourself?” I ask her.

“I am. I just wish hardass over there would take the time to notice me.” I give her a spin and then catch her into a dip, lifting my mask to kiss her lightly on the forehead.

“He notices. He’s just protecting you.”

“He can protect me on the dance floor, holding my hand, but he is practically on the other side of the room as if my existence is repulsive.” Her expression shows defeat. Parker is hurting her by protecting her. I will not stand for this. I grab her by the hand and drag her off the dancefloor and over to Parker.

“Dance with her,” I demand.

“What?” Parker replies.

“You heard me, G.I. Joe, Dance with her.” I place her hand in his, and he bows down slightly, kissing the top of her fingers.

“May I have this dance?” He asks her.

“You may.” She giggles.

Ryan and I watch as they take to the dancefloor. She lights up now that Parker has come around to giving her some attention and affection. It’s not lost on either of us that she needs us all. We have to each give her a hundred percent of us for her to feel whole. No more and no less.

“What are we going to do?” I ask Ryan.

“About?”

“Protecting her. What happens if we can’t.”

He looks at me and lifts his mask. I do the same. He then looks over to where Abigail and Parker are dancing. “I’d give my life for her, wouldn’t you?”

Without hesitation, “I would.”

“There is no matter of us not being able to protect her. We will fight until we can't fight anymore.” I nod in agreement with him.

After the song stops and Parker and Abbs are on their way back over to us, I hatch a brilliant plan.

“With the dance soon to be over, how about we play another little game?”

“You and your games, Colin.” Abigail laughs.

“How about we all go to the maze? We all will start at different entrances, and whoever finds Abigail first gets to take her home for the night. How does that sound?”

“What? I don't get to have you all in my bed tonight?” She pouts.

“Okay, fine. Whoever finds you first gets to taste that sweet kitty of yours first.”

“Much better,” she says.

We all find our starting points at the maze. We all have our ghost masks on, and we enter on the count of five.

Five.

Four.

Three.
