“Dammit,” she mumbles as the first car comes into view.

“No car?” I ask, trying not to smile. “Come on, let me help.”

“I have a car. But no key. I’ll wait for Pippa.”

“You’ll wait?” I ask incredulously. “You haven’t even told her you’re leaving. Let me help.”

“I’m fine.”

God. “You’re being stubborn.”

Willow’s eyes flash to mine, narrowing instantly. “I’m not being stubborn. Why does everyone keep saying that? I’m choosing my own path.”

Damn. That’s obviously a sore point, and I’m supposed to be making herlessmad.

Willow continues walking until she reaches a black rental. “Okay, I’m sorry. Let me call Pippa. I’ll ask her to come out and—”

“No,” she cuts me off, her body sagging against the door, her arms folded over her chest.

“Willow.Pleaselet me help. With PippaorRaven’s. I promise I didn’t know anything about this. I don’t even know the woman you were speaking to.”

“As you can see, I handled that fine on my own. And I can call Pippa. You’ve done enough.”

“I didn’t doanything.”

“That’s right,” Willow yells. “You didn’t do anything. You left us!” Her eyes widen as the words leave her mouth. Meanwhile, my heart fractures into a million pieces. She’s never going to forgive me.

“I’m sorry, Willow. I—”

“Don’t. I didn’t mean to say that. I’m just pissed off. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

“Yeah, you should have. I’d much rather you got everything out in the open.”

“I told you; I’ve moved on.”

While a little part of me wishes that were true—for her sake—a big part of me hopes that’s not the case.

“I haven’t,” I whisper, my heart picking up speed when her eyes flash my way.

“Jesse…” she whispers back, her quiet tone full of emotion. “I don’t know what you want me to say or do.”

“I want you to be honest with me, and yourself. Did seeing me tonight do anything to you?” I repeat my earlier question.

“Of course it did. I care for you, but it hurts too much.”

“How can I fix things? I need to fix things.” I take a tentative step forward and wait to see her reaction. When she doesn’t move away, I step even closer until I can reach out and palm her face. “You may not understand it, but these feelings I have are not going away. Ever. I can’t just move on. I’ll never move on.”I know this, because I tried.

Willow gasps as her eyes fall closed.

“I remembered something,” she whispers, opening her eyes again as she steps back, watching my hand fall from her cheek before her gaze meets mine. “I don’t know how, but something you’ve said or done has triggered a dream for me that I’m certain is real.”

My eyes widen before the confusion sets in.She remembered?“You think it was me?”

“I do.”

“But you never remembered anything the week we were together.” At least I assume that because she didn’t know who I was.

“No, I didn’t. And I can’t tell you what the difference is, just that it’s happening.”
