I try not to overthink it as we continue on, but it’s only a few minutes later whenmyphone rings and Seth’s name pops up. I wince and show Willow my screen. “I hate to say that you’re right, but I’m going to guess Raven’s called him.”Maybe that’s who she was expecting.

I’m about to answer when she stops me. “Don’t turn them down because of me,” she rushes out, guessing my intentions. “They make beautiful clothes and… just think about it properly.”

“I will. I’m not one to make rash decisions,” I lie, feeling a little guilty when Willow relaxes.

“Seth, my man. How are you?” I answer with a little too much enthusiasm, and Willow sees right through it, fuming beside me.

“Who are you and what have you done with Jesse Hastings?”

“Will that joke ever get old?”

“Never. Listen, I have to be quick, but Raven’s called and they’re desperate to sign you.”

“I bet they are.” I scoff.

“What does that mean? Did something happen last night?”

“Last night was great, but I’ve decided to go with someone else.”

Willow gasps as Seth curses. “Shit.”

I bite back a smile as I watch Willow, my anger softening at her bulging eyes and pursed lips, along with the invisible steam coming out of her ears.

“I thought you liked them.”

“I did, but I changed my mind. In fact, they can go f—” Willow pushes my chest and I cut myself off.

“Jesse this is a big deal. Raven’s is—”

“I know, but I’m not interested,” I say firmly. I’m done with them. “I’ll explain everything later.”

“Whatever you say.”

When he hangs up, I expect Willow to yell at me, but instead she just stares, her face tight with anger. “You,” she huffs out. “Ugh.” She turns and storms away, throwing her hands in the air. I chuckle to myself before walking after her, but she stops suddenly and spins back around.

“Why would you do that? I could hear Seth. It’s a big deal.”

“Not to me.”

“You’re…you’re incorrigible.”

“Not true at all. I’d say that was me being the opposite of incorrigible.”

“Frustrating then. Annoying. Really hard to live with. But also, really hard to—” She cuts herself off, and every part of me wants to answer for her. I’m hard to stay away from.

“I wouldn't be any of those things if you didn’t care about me.”

Her anger subsides. “We’ve been through this. I’m not denying that. But…”

“You’re not ready.”

“I’m not.”

“And you don’t know if you’ll ever be.”

She says that, but we both know that’s not true. She will be ready. It’s the time that’s in question. When we're together, the pull is strong and it’s easy to forget. It feels like we’re progressing, moving in the right direction, when in reality, this could just be an experiment for her. Nothing’s changed.

Yet.
