I hissed. “That’s obvious. And it’s what’s keeping us apart.”

“A beast doesn’t deny what belongs to him.”

My eyes were black when I met his gaze again. “An alpha puts aside his needs for those of his pack.”

“Never were good at controlling the beast, were you?”

“You purposefully draw him out.” My words barely more than a snarl.

“To show you.”

“Show me what?” My canines extended as he spoke, proving his words. “At least I admit I have a beast.” I knew what I was. My wolf and I were at peace.

“No, you admit you are two, bound by a shared form. I know what I am. I’ve been a monster since I was created. I don’t pretend to be a man or to have the morals of one. I embrace it and know there is no line between my monster and me. We are one and the same. Once you admit you aren’t bound by human morals, then you can form your own.”

“What point are you trying to make, Vinkettin?”

“When you embrace all of yourself as a monster, you’ll stop trying to be human at all. We aren’t meant to live like those we share the earth with, and that’s why your kind keeps losing the war.” He softened his grip, and his touch turned soft, stroking into my hairline. “Such a waste of time, but you’re so young. How can I blame you?”

“I know what I am.” My eyes rolled back in my head. It was hard to argue with him. Hard to argue anything with his hands on me.

“You are too intertwined with this idea of pack and the life you think you should be living.” His mouth was over mine now, breath warm on my lips.

I opened for him but didn’t chase. He’d give in when he was ready. “I have a duty.”

“And yet you’re here again, going against your duty.”

“What would you have me do?”

He licked past my tongue, over my teeth, flirting with danger the same way I had. “I’d have you defy yourself and your pack. We were created for each other. How could it be wrong?”

“My pack willkillme.”

“And you stay loyal to people who would tell you to deny fate?”

“Tell me what you’d have me do?” I demanded again.

“Stop wasting this.”

I knew he was right. We were wasting it. Wasting every day we had on this earth together. Vin had an unlimited amount of time, only fearing death as a kind of extreme possibility. My days were limited. Our time was bound by my lifespan, and I was wasting it.

“We have the next life.” I should tell myself to pry his hands off of me and leave, but I couldn’t.

“Stop selling me fantasies. I want now.”

“I’m here.”

“For a fuck before you return to your pack. I know what I am to you.” He pressed his forehead to mine in another moment of softness.

“We keep going in circles.” I pressed our bodies together to feel all of him. “Wouldn’t you rather fuck me?”

“You are the only being on this planet who has ever made me stupid.” As he spoke, he bent and scooped an arm under my thigh, moving me like I weighed nothing.

“Maybe I like you better stupid.” I didn’t fight the gesture. We were equally matched, and I knew it was his way of exerting his last ounce of control.

“I’m going to chain you to my bed so you can’t leave.” He bent his head to lick over the head of my cock.

“Fuck.” I clawed at his hair, needing something to hold on to.
