And now I knew why she was so willing to help him. It all played into her plans. Year after year, she granted him a potion to stop his seed so she could take full advantage of trying to merge their fates.

I wasn’t sure if this was a blessing in disguise or a curse, and he probably didn’t know either.

“I see.”

“We can’t do this without you,” the woman whispered.

“What’s your name, dear?” I asked, trying to be what might be the only calm presence in a possibly explosive situation.

“Rayne,” she offered, turning toward me with the same smile she’d given Dominic.

“It’s a pleasure, Rayne.” His expression gave away nothing, but the bond flooded with turmoil and unease, mixing with my own. He kept most of it back, but not enough.

This changed the course of his history and mine, and we both knew it.

“And you expect me to raise him like an heir?” Dominic asked still staring at the girl.

“You must. If he is indeed aheand awolf. He will need to be with his people.”

Dominic stiffened almost unnoticeably, but I caught it. “You don’t know if the child will be a wolf?”

“How can we? This is an experiment in every way. There aren’t exactly spells for infusing your kind and mine. It took this long for it to take.”

I cringed. Not much set me off, but this felt like a violation in every sense of the word.

“It’s a boy?” he asked, much calmer than I would have been.

“We don’t know,” Rayne replied easily.

“How?” Dominic stared at her swollen belly. “Surely, with modern technology...” He trailed off as she shook her head.

“No, there is a—shell—around the fetus. We know nothing. We won’t even know if he’s one of you for many years.”

“Right, not until he’s called by the moon.” Dominic reached out but paused. The waves coming through our connection weren’t angry, which surprised me. He seemed curious, scared, and maybe a little pleased.

She nodded.

“Can I?” Dominic’s hand lingered near her stomach.

“Yes.” She smiled, stepping toward him. “The child feels your presence.”

He brushed his fingers over her stomach tentatively.

I didn’t know how to feel. This wasn’t what I expected.

Rayne took his hand and pressed it firmly to her stomach. “The child is kicking.”

Dominic met Rayne’s eyes. “It’s a boy.”

Rayne gasped. “Surely you can’t know…”

“I know. I can feel him.” He smiled, closing his eyes. There was sadness laced in it. “The pack will take care of him when he comes into his power.”

Rayne smiled, joy bursting from her.

“Thank you,” the priestess said.

But neither of them noticed he’d said the pack, not him. He didn’t expect to live long enough to meet his son.
