We left in silence.

Drove in silence.

What was there to say? I didn’t dare bring up the child or the lack of answers, not while emotions roiled behind his eyes and his hands rested on the steering wheel, holding more horsepower than a person should wield.

Rafael stood in the drive when we pulled in.

“What?” Dominic asked.

“There is unrest.”

“Add it to the list.” Dominic shoved past him.

“What’s his problem?” Rafael turned on me.

“He got some unfortunate news,” I said, keeping it vague, as it wasn’t mine to share.

Rafael shot me a look, but I shook my head, so he followed Dominic into the house. “What now?”

“I’m going to be a father.”

“Math might not be my strong suit, but the last quickening where that was a possibility was over a year ago, so...”

“He traded his blood to a priestess and… Well, she somehow used that to make a child and is now merging your bloodlines.” I sat at the table and picked up the paper, needing the secrets to stop piling up.

Rafael choked. “Life finds a way.” He laughed, scrubbing a hand over his face.

I didn’t blame him. I’d like to get to the point of laughing, but I was too concerned for Dominic’s mood to be there yet.

“This isn’t Jurassic Park,” Dominic scoffed.

“I mean, amber, extracted with magic, same difference. Still making beasts that have no place in the natural world.” Rafael sat on the edge of the table. “What are we going to do?”

“Wait and see, like every fucking thing else.”

THIRTY-THREE

DOMINIC

“Dominic,” my brother tried again, seeming to sober from the initial shock of the revelation.

“It’s not even worth talking about.” And I believed it, too. There was too much else about to capsize us. Why would I concern myself with a what-if?

“Dominic,” Vin wanted the same.

“Don’t.” An edge crept into my voice. “It’s done.” They all wanted answers, but I had none.

Vin crossed his arms over his chest. Even without our connection, I knew enough about the posture to tell me it wasn’t done.

“It’s not fucking done,” my brother said through his teeth. “This will affect us all.”

“In how many years? We need to focus on today. Today, someone is stealing our blood and using it to create super beasts. Ones we can’t detect on our own land.”

Rafael seethed, but at least he shut up.

“What are we doing about it today?” Vin asked.

“We have to find them. There has to be a nest around here old enough to know what the elders do, one that would be close enough to make it convenient. We must find it.” Dominic sounded resolved.
