“I know, but he said he doesn’t want to continue,” I countered.

Now, Aiden was here. It appeared that he had changed his mind, but I couldn't be so sure. Aiden walked closer to where I was, but he had not yet answered the question I asked him.

“Kayla,” he breathed. He was standing right in front of me now, and I was staring into his green eyes. “The whole time I have been without you has been terrible. I've realized that I not only love you, but I need you beside me. I want you, Kayla. Come back into my life.”

It was touching to hear Aiden speak this way. I could see that he genuinely meant what he said. He wanted to get back together with me. I was overwhelmed with a barrage of emotions myself.

“I'm sorry for everything, for comparing you to a slut, for getting mad when there was no reason to be, for yelling at you, for not telling you important things about me, for attempting to push you off. I’m sorry for everything. I'm ready to make amends. I promise to be straightforward with you from now on….”

He continued to speak until words were no longer needed. Aiden leaned forward for a kiss, a reconciliation kiss, and I obliged him. I shuddered the moment my lips touched his. I realized just how badly I'd longed for his touch all these weeks when he'd kept his distance from me. Now, I had my man back.

There was a loud cough behind us, and I quickly pulled away from the kiss, thinking it was a customer who had come to buy a book. I was shocked to see that it was Mr. Wilkes, my boss. He was understandably pissed that I was in a man’s arms and kissing him at the counter when a customer could have easily walked in. Still, I was surprised when he uttered his next words.

“You're fired, Kayla,” he roared. “Get your ass out of my store right now.”

His face was so scrunched up in an attempt to look really angry that I somehow just found it funny. I exchanged glances with Aiden, and we both burst into laughter. Mr. Wilkes was surprised that we were laughing instead of begging to save my job.

Aiden and I left the store, and we went to his car, which was in the parking lot.

“Maybe I should consider that publishing job now,” I told Aiden.

“Yeah, I’m sure you'll like it there, or I can fix you up in one of our companies? How would you like that?” he asked, winking. “I know you want to take some time to think about it.”

“Yeah,” I said as we stood beside the car. “Where are we going now?”

“To my sister’s, I told her I would drop by for dinner, and you know what?”

“What? I can’t guess.’

“I told her you were coming,” Aiden revealed.

“How did you know I was going to agree to take you back?” I asked, smiling. Aiden chuckled as he opened the door for me to get into the car.

“You know the answer,” he said.

He was right. I knew that we loved each other, and I was sure that Aiden’s confidence came from that. Aiden slipped in the driver’s seat beside me and winked at me. I smiled back. I had every reason to. I had my man back, and I had a better job on the horizon. There was no way I could have imagined that my day would end this way.

Aiden turned on the engine, and we began the drive to his sister’s house. I couldn't wait to meet his family. This was a fresh chapter in our love story, and I looked forward to the beautiful times ahead.
