Not with her, anyway.

And wasn’tthatgoing to be an interesting conversation when it eventually took place?

Sighing quietly, she squeezed the excess water from her hair and felt it trickle down her back, then shivered and clenched as it slipped between her arse cheeks.

“Fuck my life.”

Chapter Two

Jane stood in the doorway of her bedroom, cocooned in a fluffy pink dressing gown, her hands a flurry of activity as she dried her hair.

She wasn’t going to think about how she was supposed to be boarding an aeroplane to Melbourne, how she was supposed to be starting a new life with her husband and not standing in the middle of her childhood bedroom, dripping water on the floor.

“Arsehole,” she spat.

“That’s one word for him.”

“Jesus!” Clutching at her chest, Jane spun towards the intruder and blew out a lungful of air. “You scared the shit out of me.”

A rumble of thunder overhead and a crack of lightning added to the overall creepiness of the situation.

Her bedroom, like the rest of the house, was bathed in shadows from the brewing storm, but she needed to see him. Unable to face the harsh glare of her bedroom light, she switched on her bedside lamp instead.

Its soft glow barely illuminated the room, but it cast enough light to outline the large ethereal figure occupying her reading chair in the corner.

Rising from the armchair, Rafe ignored the social niceties and said, “Is it true?”

His voice was gruff, deep.Sensual.

Great.Juuust great….

As always, his nearness made her shiver with anticipation. It screamed along her veins and arrowed downwards, and she fought the urge to squirm.

Clenching her jaw, she tightened her dressing gown and forced back the intense sexual awareness she’d only ever felt for one man.Rafael. And if he was here to add insult to injury, so help her, she would—

“Why?” She snapped out the word. “Did you come to gloat? Say I told you so? Well you can save it. I’m not in the mood for one of your lectures.” Rafe moved closer and Jane took a step backwards, almost gasping as he stepped into the light. “You look like shit,” she said, lifting her chin in a show of bravado. “Don’t you ever shave?”

Large hands settled over her hips and prevented her from retreating farther. Listless blue eyes stared down at her, underscored by dark smudges. He looked like he hadn’t slept in weeks. He smelled almost as bad.

Eyes narrowing, she slapped his hands away. “Have you been drinking?”

A contemptuous look flickered over his features, then just as quickly disappeared. “Of course I’ve been fucking drinking,” he growled, his rich voice rasping over her last nerve. Then, like the cold-hearted bastard he was, he just stood there, unmoving except for the gentle rise and fall of his chest.

Unflappable.

Unfeeling.

The only consideration stopping her from kicking him out of the house was the fact he didn’t sound anywhere near as drunk as he smelled.

He continued his interrogation. “Answer the damn question.”

Tossing her hair towel aside and anchoring her hands on her hips, Jane glared up at him. “Ask me a damn question worth answering.”

She felt a moment of triumph when Rafe’s mouth tightened into a thin line. A reaction. Small, but not insignificant.

He spoke through gritted teeth. “Is it true? Are you pregnant?”

Unease slid along her veins, but she lifted her chin again, uncertain, scared, but determined and unashamed. “Yes.”
