Chapter Fourteen

Archer

––––––––

“What the fuck was thatout there?” Tyler slams his helmet down onto the bench, clearly frustrated by my performance today.

He’s not the only one.

In fact, I’d venture to say my entire team is pretty pissed at me.

Fifteen for forty-two with four interceptions. I couldn’t make this shit up if I tried.

We still won the game by some miracle of a chance. Thanks in large part to our defense who had three defensive scores and held them to only three points on my four turnovers.

“It’s like you were trying to throw to the other team,” Ryder joins in.

“I had a fucking bad game. Sue me. We still fucking won.” I tear off my pads, throwing them so hard into my locker that several other things fall out on impact. “Fuck!” I tug at the strands of my hair, still damp with sweat.

I’m spiraling. I know it. And now everyone else does too.

“That wasn’t just a bad game, Arch,” Ryder disagrees. “It’s almost like you wanted to lose.”

“Fuck off. Of course I didn’t.”

“Then what the fuck, man? You haven’t been yourself all week. Not in practice, and sure as shit not in that game.”

“I’m just dealing with some shit. Maybe you guys could cut me some slack.” Even as I say it, I know I don’t deserve it.

After what I did, I’m pretty sure the only thing I deserve is a good-ass beating. Hell, maybe two or three.

“Cut you some slack?” I look up to see Enzo closing in on us.

He hasn’t spoken to me since I ended things with Rory. Makes sense, considering he’s dating her best friend. Though, I’ll admit, I didn’t expect him to actively avoid me the way he has.

Again, not that I don’t deserve it.

“That’s a big ask considering the shit you pulled with Rory.”

“Wait, what?” Higgins chooses this moment to appear.

“You haven’t told them?” Enzo barks out a laugh. “Wow, that’s rich.”

“Told us what?” Tyler asks.
