“But why?” I frown.

He claims my lips in a brief kiss and nudges me inside. “Because you do. I’ll wait out here.”

Still confused, I enter omega territory while Kylian waits for me outside, pulling the door closed to give me privacy.

It doesn’t take long to change out of my damp shorts and top and into a pair of snuggly soft cotton sweats, a T-shirt, and an oversized sweater.

When I open my door, Kylian nods approvingly, grips my hand, and leads us back to the stairs where Rune and Cian are waiting for us.

“But I don’t understand,” I mutter as we trail Rune and Cian down the stairs. “Shouldn’t we be preparing for Lawrence to come back or—”

“Sweet or salty?” Cian halts in the entryway and angles his head back to me.

“What does that have to do with anything?” I say as we hit the entryway and Kylian tugs us toward a closed door. It’s not the gym, the den, or the office. It’s not a room I’ve been in before. Maybe another reception room?

“She wants both,” Kylian says. “And load up on everything else as well.”

I bounce my eyes between them, growing more confused by the second. “But I—”

Rune pulls the door open and steps aside, gesturing toward it. “Come on, cher.”

I take one look at the dark doorway, at the steps heading downward and a fist tightens around my heart.

“No!” I dig my heels into the marble entryway.

Rune stops gesturing to the door. Kylian stops tugging on my hand, and Cian stops heading toward the kitchen for whatever sweet and salty he was asking me about.

Everything stops.

Except my racing heart. That keeps on galloping along.

Rune lets the door slam shut behind him as he strides toward me.

I watch him, every muscle in my body tense as I calculate the distance between him and the front door. With Kylian gripping my hand, I can’t see myself making it. But maybe I should still try?

And then Rune is right in front of me, blocking my escape with his powerful shoulders. Hunching over slightly, he frames my face with both hands. “Breathe, cher. This is no trap, and this is no cage. Breathe.”

I drag a deep breath in as I stare up at him. Rune hums in approval and Kylian squeezes my hand, lifts it to his mouth, and brushes a kiss over my knuckles as I release my breath. “Good girl.”

It wasn’t all that long ago those words dragged me the rest of the way into an explosive climax. As I fight to steady my panicked breathing, they have the same effect on me as watching a washing machine doing its final spin.

That’s to say, not a fucking thing.

“Again,” Rune repeats, not breaking his stare.

I meet his warm amber eyes, drag in another breath, which seems to help to slow my panting heart, and release the breath again.

He lowers his head, pressing a lingering kiss on my forehead that makes me want to lean in for more. “A Fontenot excels at two things, cher. Want to know what those things are?”

Kylian blows out a long sigh. “If you’re going to tell us one of those things is cooking on the back of—”

Rune glares him into silence.

Kylian mutters something else about garbage and nightmares, which almost makes me smile. When Rune threatens to stuffhimin the garbage, a tiny smile makes its way out.

Rune’s eyes soften when they return to me. “Cooking. And keeping his word. I promised you we wouldn’t keep you here if you wanted to leave, and I meant it. I’m not looking to cage you.”

I desperately want to believe him.
